The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has named Bohol Island in the Philippines as one of the 18 additional sites that were included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.

In a press release on Wednesday, Bohol Island joined 194 other geoparks from 47 countries that will be under the protection of UNESCO, because of its international geological significance. The island is known for its caves and cone karst, including the famous cone-shaped Chocolate Hills, as well as its double barrier reef along the northern coast.

This is the first time that a Philippine destination has been included in the UNESCO Global Geopark list.

"The island’s geological identity has been pieced together over 150 million years, as periods of tectonic turbulence have raised the island from the ocean depths. Traces of the island’s subterranean past can be found in the limestone which forms characteristic karstic structures," UNESCO wrote.
