CANDLE LIGHTING PROGRAM

In the wake of the recent incident, El Consejo Atenista invites the Ateneo community to come together in prayer and remembrance.

Let us light a candle as a symbol of healing and solidarity as we accompany one another through this difficult time.

Even in our darkest hours, God’s love will always guide us to the light of healing and salvation.

In a time of grief and uncertainty, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) community gathered in prayer through the Mass for Healing on August 20, 2026, at the University Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Mass offered a sacred space for the community to grieve, seek comfort in God’s presence, and draw strength from one another.

Students, parents, and personnel found solace in the Gospel and the saving promise of the Holy Eucharist. The Mass was presided over by University President Fr. Ernald M. Andal, SJ, together with his fellow Jesuit brothers.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, Fr. Joel A. Liwanag, SJ, a Jesuit Counselor and Psychotherapist, facilitated a time of processing, reflection, and listening, creating a safe space for the community to express their experiences and listen to one another. Through this shared reflection, the community nurtured compassion, understanding, and hope as it moved toward healing.

Like the Centurion at the foot of the Cross, we remain present amid suffering, trusting that God is with us even in the darkness. Guided by the wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola and through the intercession of Mary, may we continue to walk together in hope, allowing God’s grace to heal our wounds and renew our community.

Prayer for Healing and Courage

Merciful God,

In this moment of sorrow and fear,
we place into Your loving hands
all those affected by this tragedy.
Welcome into Your eternal embrace those who have died.
Heal the wounded, comfort those who grieve,
and strengthen all who carry the pain of this moment.

Lord Jesus, You are our Light in the darkness.
When fear overwhelms us, give us courage.
When sorrow weighs upon us, give us hope.
When violence wounds us,
make us instruments of Your peace.

Bless our Ateneo community with healing, unity, and compassion.
May we stand together, care for one another, and never allow darkness to overcome the light of Christ within us.

Through Mary, Mother of Sorrows and Mother of Hope, lead us closer to Your peace.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

In moments like this, let us be mindful of what we share. While keeping our community informed matters, so does the care with which we speak of and portray what has happened.

Let us refrain from circulating graphic images and videos. May we inform without diminishing the weight of what others are going through, and respond with the sensitivity such moments call for.
May we choose Cura Personalis—not only as a Jesuit community, but simply as human beings.
