Mr. Eslao authored the section "A Trilogy of Flags: Fort Pilar and Zamboanga in 1899," a contribution to the larger work primarily written by Mr. John Mark B. Ojales, Museum Researcher II of the National Museum of the Philippines - Zamboanga. His article examines one of the most dynamic periods in Zamboanga's history, when Fort Pilar witnessed successive transitions of power and sovereignty during the closing years of the Spanish colonial era and the emergence of new political realities in the Philippines.
The Department commends Mr. Eslao for his commitment to advancing local historical scholarship and contributing to the preservation and interpretation of Zamboanga's rich heritage. His work reflects the Department's mission of promoting rigorous historical research, cultivating historical consciousness, and making local history accessible to wider audiences.
We encourage students, researchers, heritage advocates, and members of the community to explore this important publication and learn more about the enduring significance of Fort Pilar in the story of Zamboanga and the Philippines.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines inaugurates its new lecture series, the Samuel K. Tan Lecture Series, featuring two distinguished visiting scholars who will open a vital conversation on the intersections of global ambition and local resilience in Philippine history.
The inaugural session, to be held on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, brings together complementary perspectives on early modern and colonial encounters. Xavier Huetz de Lemps will revisit a little-known episode in the history of Basilan, examining Franceโs attempt to claim possession of the island. In turn, Eberhard Crailsheim will explore the economic exchanges between Spaniards and "Morosโ from 1565 to 1800, offering insights into patterns of interaction across cultural and political boundaries.
This lecture series forms part of the NHCPโs lead-up to the 2030 Year of Philippine Muslim History and Heritage, a commemorative observance established by virtue of Administrative Order No. 10, s. 2023. This initiative seeks to highlight the enduring contributions of Muslim Filipinos to the nationโs history.
In this light, we invite history enthusiasts, local historians, and, in particular, Muslim Filipino communities and those in the Bangsamoro Region to join us from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN, both online and onsite at the NHCP Serafin Quiason Resource Center, NHCP Building, Ermita, Manila. Register by scanning the QR Codes in the Poster.
Be part of this meaningful dialogue as we collectively advance toward the commemorative year and deepen our understanding of the past.
