Mr. Eslao authored the section "A Trilogy of Flags: Fort Pilar and Zamboanga in 1899," a contribution to the larger work primarily written by Mr. John Mark B. Ojales, Museum Researcher II of the National Museum of the Philippines - Zamboanga. His article examines one of the most dynamic periods in Zamboanga's history, when Fort Pilar witnessed successive transitions of power and sovereignty during the closing years of the Spanish colonial era and the emergence of new political realities in the Philippines.

The Department commends Mr. Eslao for his commitment to advancing local historical scholarship and contributing to the preservation and interpretation of Zamboanga's rich heritage. His work reflects the Department's mission of promoting rigorous historical research, cultivating historical consciousness, and making local history accessible to wider audiences.

We encourage students, researchers, heritage advocates, and members of the community to explore this important publication and learn more about the enduring significance of Fort Pilar in the story of Zamboanga and the Philippines.

The Social Sciences Department proudly celebrates the scholarly contribution of Dr. Ma. Christina A. Caรฑones, whose paper, โ€œArchival Pathways: Locating the (Re)Sources in the Preservation of the History of Zamboanga,โ€ is featured in the 2025 Regional Heritage Forum Proceedings published by the National Museum of the Philippines and now available online.

As historians and social scientists, we recognize that archives are more than repositories of documentsโ€”they are gateways to understanding our past, preserving collective memory, and strengthening historical consciousness. Through her work, Dr. Caรฑones underscores the importance of archival research in safeguarding Zamboangaโ€™s rich historical heritage and ensuring that future generations have access to reliable sources for the study of local history.

Her contribution forms part of the 2025 Regional Heritage Forum Proceedings, which gathers scholars and heritage practitioners committed to advancing heritage documentation, preservation, and research methodologies. This publication reflects a shared commitment to protecting and promoting the cultural and historical treasures of our communities.

The Department commends Dr. Caรฑones for her continued dedication to historical scholarship and her invaluable contribution to the growing body of literature on Zamboanga history and heritage. Her work exemplifies our mission of advancing research that enriches public understanding, preserves cultural memory, and contributes meaningfully to nation-building.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines inaugurates its new lecture series, the Samuel K. Tan Lecture Series, featuring two distinguished visiting scholars who will open a vital conversation on the intersections of global ambition and local resilience in Philippine history.

The inaugural session, to be held on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, brings together complementary perspectives on early modern and colonial encounters. Xavier Huetz de Lemps will revisit a little-known episode in the history of Basilan, examining Franceโ€™s attempt to claim possession of the island. In turn, Eberhard Crailsheim will explore the economic exchanges between Spaniards and "Morosโ€ from 1565 to 1800, offering insights into patterns of interaction across cultural and political boundaries.

This lecture series forms part of the NHCPโ€™s lead-up to the 2030 Year of Philippine Muslim History and Heritage, a commemorative observance established by virtue of Administrative Order No. 10, s. 2023. This initiative seeks to highlight the enduring contributions of Muslim Filipinos to the nationโ€™s history.

In this light, we invite history enthusiasts, local historians, and, in particular, Muslim Filipino communities and those in the Bangsamoro Region to join us from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN, both online and onsite at the NHCP Serafin Quiason Resource Center, NHCP Building, Ermita, Manila. Register by scanning the QR Codes in the Poster.

Be part of this meaningful dialogue as we collectively advance toward the commemorative year and deepen our understanding of the past.
