Today marks the Ash Wednesday to a solemn beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of reflection, fasting, and penance. It is most recognized by the tradition of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of the faithful in the shape of a cross. These ashes are typically made by burning the palm fronds from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. As the ashes are applied, a minister usually recites a reminder of human mortality, such as "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return," or a call to spiritual renewal: "Repent, and believe in the Gospel."

The day serves as a "spiritual wake-up call." It falls on a Wednesday to ensure the Lenten season (excluding Sundays). For many, it is a day of fasting and abstinence—traditionally abstaining from meat—meant to shift focus away from physical indulgences and toward prayer and acts of charity. It’s a quiet, introspective start to a season focused on humility and the preparation of the heart.

May this holy season awaken in us a sincere love for God and neighbor, that our fasting and prayer bear fruit in mercy and holiness.
