Zamboanga City, January 23, 2025—The Department of Education (DepEd) – Zamboanga City Division is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all learners, teaching and non-teaching personnel following the recent earthquake that struck the city. The tremor, recorded at Intensity 5.4, has prompted immediate action in compliance with DepEd Order No. 22, s. 2024, which provides guidelines on the suspension of In-person classes and work in schools during emergencies and disasters.

Immediate Actions and Directives:

Assessment of School Safety
- All school heads are directed to thoroughly inspect school buildings and facilities to assess
potential damage or hazards.
- Any unsafe structure will be temporarily closed until necessary repairs are completed.

2. Suspension of In-person classes if Necessary
- In areas affected by the earthquake, in-person classes are automatically suspended for safety
inspections, as per DepEd Order No. 22, s. 2024.
- Parents and guardians are encouraged to prioritize the safety of learners during this time.

3. Implementation of Alternative Learning Modalities
- Schools with ongoing suspensions are instructed to shift to modular distance learning to ensure
continuity of education.

4. Mandatory Earthquake Drills
Schools are reminded to earnestly conduct regular earthquake and evacuation drills to strengthen
preparedness and response measures among students and staff.

DepEd Zamboanga City Division remains true in its commitment to prioritize safety and ensure minimal disruption to learning. We urge all stakeholders to stay informed through official DepEd channels and adhere to safety advisories from local authorities.
