Today, May 14, 2026, the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES) Program of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology proudly celebrates a significant milestone as four (4) BSES 4th year student research groups successfully presented their research studies during the 9th Undergraduate Research Forum (URF) conducted at the Audio Visual Room of ZSCMST.

This yearโ€™s URF, organized by the BS Food Technology Program under the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences (CFAS), successfully brought together undergraduate researchers from different colleges and academic programs within the institution, creating a collaborative venue for research exchange, academic engagement, and scientific discussion. The rationale of this academic event is to promote a culture of research among undergraduate students by providing them with a platform to present their research findings, share scientific knowledge, and strengthen research involvement across various disciplines.

Representing the BSES Program in the Oral Category Competition were the following studies:

โ€œENVIRONMENTAL BASELINE CHARACTERIZATION OF PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL COMPONENTS AT ZSCMST VICTORIA CAMPUSโ€

Authored by: Francis T. Bais, Baby Glades V. Espino, Lance Kennette Ramos, and William Salome
Research Adviser: Ms. Ahasmarie C. Pasion-Pasinabo
Co-Adviser: Ms. Kia Piรฑero-Abdurajak

For the Poster Category, the BSES Program was represented by:

โ€œCHARACTERIZATION, ABUNDANCE, AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF MICROPLASTICS IN THE SITE B FISHPOND OF ZAMBOANGA STATE COLLEGE OF MARINE SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGYโ€

Authored by: Andrew I. Paliguid, Merlina J. Ahmadmokhtar, Caisar A. Naing, and Arnazal T. Halilulla
Research Adviser: Ms. Kia Piรฑero-Abdurajak
Presented by: Andrew I. Paliguid

A special recognition was given to the study titled โ€œEnvironmental Baseline Characterization of Physical and Biological Components at ZSCMST Victoria Campusโ€ presented by Francis T. Bais, which garnered the 2nd Place Award among 19 presenters from different colleges across the institution during the URF competition.

This accomplishment reflects the growing strength of the BSES Program in research and scientific engagement. The active participation and recognition received by the student researchers signify an important milestone for the program, highlighting the competence, dedication, and excellence of BSES students in advancing environmental science research and innovation.

The BSES Program also extends its warmest congratulations and appreciation to the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences (CFAS) as the host college, together with the BS Food Technology Program, organizers, panel of evaluators, faculty members, and participating colleges for the successful conduct of the Undergraduate Research Forum (URF)

๐„๐€๐‘๐‹๐ˆ๐„๐‘ ๐“๐Ž๐ƒ๐€๐˜ || In line with the celebration of Earth Day 2026 with the theme โ€œOur Power, Our Planet,โ€ the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences, through the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES) Program and the Green and Blue Environmental Science Society (GABLES), successfully conducted a Clean-Up Drive at the Mangrove Area of the campus as part of the kick-off celebration for Earth Day 2026.

This meaningful activity was actively participated by the students and faculty members of the Environmental Science Program, showing their unity, cooperation, and shared commitment in caring for the environment.

Although Earth Day is officially celebrated every April 22, the program and society decided to hold the celebration today April 29, 2026 to ensure a more meaningful, organized, and participative observance exclusively for the students and faculty of Environmental Science.

This whole-day celebration aims to promote environmental awareness, strengthen camaraderie within the Environmental Science family, encourage volunteerism, and inspire both students and faculty to take active responsibility in protecting and conserving natural resources.

The activities prepared for the students and faculty of the Environmental Science Program include various literary and academic competitions such as Poster Making Contest, Slogan Contest, Essay Writing, Creative Writing, and Quiz Bee. At lunchtime, participants will also gather for a fellowship through a boodle fight salo-salo, followed by exciting Palarong Pinoy activities in the afternoon. The much-awaited highlight of the celebration will be the DanSing Competition, where students will showcase their talents, creativity, and teamwork.

The BSES Program and GABLES Society would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the administration of Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology headed by Roy Lim Valesco for the approval, trust, and unwavering support extended in making this Earth Day celebration possible.
