𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐍 𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐈𝐅 𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐍?

Limitado lang naman ang binabanggit ng Bible patungkol sa origin ni Satan. Even the passages that are said to be about his fall, like in Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28, are up until now debatable. Kahit sa Genesis 3 kung saan binanggit ang ahas sa Eden, hindi rin nag-effort ang writer na i-explain kung sino talaga ang ahas at bakit siya naligaw sa garden. Ang ideya na maaring si Satan nga ang ahas ay based lang din sa later Christian tradition, na may biblical passage din naman na basis (see Rev 12:9).

Paano nga ba nagkasala si Satan kung siya ay nasa presensya ng banal na Diyos? We are simply speculating sa usapin na ito dahil wala namang direktang explanation o biblical passage para sagutin ito. Though this remains a question, there are truths revealed in the Bible that are worth thinking about and might lead us to a possible answer. Scholars often give us different valid views to answer this question. While others, like the Reformed theologian John Piper, admitted that it is a mystery. “How did Satan become evil? I do not know…To say that Satan had free will — that is, ultimate self-determination — is not an explanation for why he committed his first sin. It is a label. It is not an explanation.” (Piper). May point din naman dahil hindi talaga natin alam kung sa paanong paraan si Satan nagrebelde sa Diyos. We just assumed it happened.

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗚𝗼𝗱?

Some extreme Calvinists suggest that the Devil just followed his desire (which was allegedly given by God), resulting in his rebellion. This theory made God the one who caused Satan to sin—which is really a contradiction, knowing that God Himself is holy. Regarding this, the theologian Norman Geisler comments, “Opposites cannot both be true at the same time and in the same sense. God cannot be good and not good. He cannot be for His own essential good and be against it by giving Lucifer the desire to sin against Him. In short, God cannot be for Himself and against Himself at the same time and in the same sense.” The emphasis of the Bible on God’s holiness is more than enough for us to reject this idea.

𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲.

Isa sa mga common valid explanations dito ay si Satan ay nilikhang may kakayahang pumili katulad ng iba pang spiritual beings at ng mga tao. Dahil ang Diyos ay puno ng love at holiness, ginusto ng Diyos na ang mga creatures na nakapaligid sa Kanya ay Kanyang mamahalin din, at mamahalin din Siya. At dahil banal Siya, gusto rin Niya na maging banal ang Kanyang mga nilikha. “By logical necessity love and holiness cannot be forced. Compulsory love or holiness could not satisfy the all-wise Creator. Therefore these loving and holy creatures must be able to choose whether to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever or to reject Him or suffer the consequences.” (Arthur B. Fowler). God’s own character and desire to His creatures demand that they must have the ability to choose.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗸.

Some scholars suggest na dahil ang mga spiritual beings, like Satan, ay nilikha na may kakayahang pumili, masasabing “dumistansya” rin ang Diyos sa kanila in order to give them the “space” to choose. Sa ibang salita, hindi Niya ginawang “overwhelmingly obvious” ang Kanyang sarili sa kanila. Binigyan sila ng Diyos ng kakayahang pumili —at binigyan din sila Niya ng opportunity na pumili. God also gave Adam and Eve the ability to choose whether to obey God or not. And by creating the forbidden tree and allowing the snake in the garden, He distanced Himself from them so they could freely make a decision. “Angels, therefore, had the opportunity to choose God or choose not-God, that anti-God posture. And that anti-God posture is what we’re saying evil is. “ (Guy M. Richard). At alam naman natin ang nangyari; Satan chose to be anti-God.

Tinawag ng Christian philosopher na si William Lane Craig ito na “epistemic distance.” “God has created us at an ‘epistemic distance,’ so to speak, which allows us the freedom to rebel against Him and separate ourselves from Him. This world is a vale of decision-making during which we decide whether we want to live with God forever or reject Him and so irrevocably separate ourselves from Him…Something like this may have already occurred with angelic beings. Originally created ‘at arm’s length’ from God epistemically, they had a time to choose either for or against God.” (Craig). Interestingly, may halos parehong observation din si Piper na tinawag naman naman niyang “cloaking of glory,” kung saan hindi lubusang pinakita ng Diyos ang Kanyang glory sa mga spiritual beings tulad ni Satan. “I am not saying this is a foolproof explanation of sin, but somehow God cloaked his glory from Lucifer, and in the cloaking of his glory — somehow still inexplicable to me — there rises a preference in Lucifer’s heart for himself over God, who has cloaked his glory.” (Piper). Whether tingnan natin ito na distance o cloaking, we can say na kailangan ng Diyos na gawin ito para bigyan ang creatures Niya ng opportunity to choose.

This is an interesting topic. And there is nothing wrong with believers asking questions like this. God assured us that though we might not find the accurate answer in this world, we have eternity to find out. “For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.” (Lk 8:17). 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴.
