IN PHOTOS: On August 12, BSOP had the privilege of inviting Dr. John Yieh to give a special lecture for the students in the Chinese track. The topic of the lecture was “Enacting the Scripture for the Church: A History-of-Effects Approach.”

Dr. Yieh first introduced the History of Effects as a newer approach to biblical interpretation. He then demonstrated this method through two biblical passages: Matthew 16:13–19, concerning the rock of the Christian Church, and Luke 10:30–37, the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Through Dr. Yieh’s lecture, the students gained a deeper understanding of how these passages have been interpreted in various ways throughout the history of the Church. This approach helped us discover many spiritual resources within the history of biblical interpretation and enriched our understanding of Scripture.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. John Yieh for his insightful teaching and for sharing his knowledge and experience with us.

CHAPEL HIGHLIGHT

Today's chapel service featured Rev. Dr. Johann Lai, who brought a powerful message entitled "Discerning Eye to See Heavenly Mystery" (Joshua 5:13-15).

Rev. Dr. Lai challenged us to shift our posture before God, reminding us that the real question is never whether God is on our side, but whether we are standing on His. Before we talk strategy or ministry plans, we must first examine our hearts and ask if we are truly, completely submitted to the Lord.

"Don't ask whether God's on our side. Ask yourself, 'Am I standing at Your side, God?' This is changing from our own perspective to God's perspective."
— Rev. Dr. Johann Lai

May this truth continue to challenge and shape us as we walk in discernment and full surrender to His will.

Chapel Highlight:

Today, we were blessed to have Rev. Dr. John Yueh Han Yieh share God's Word with us in chapel, preaching on "Temptation and Choice."

Drawing from Genesis 2:15; 3:1-7 (Adam and Eve) and Matthew 4:1-11 (Jesus in the Wilderness), Dr. Yieh reminded us that temptation is part of the human story, but our response to it is a choice.

"Even in our vulnerability, the best way to overcome temptations is to follow Jesus, who chose to humble himself to trust and obey God."

Where Adam and Eve gave in to doubt and self-reliance, Jesus modeled humility, trust, and obedience to the Father, even in the wilderness. May we choose the same posture of trust when we face our own moments of testing.

Chapel Highlight:

Today, we were blessed to have Dr. Joseph Shao, President Emeritus of the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines, share God's Word with us in chapel.

Reflecting on Psalm 62, Dr. Shao reminded us that:
- We Wait Patiently for His Salvation (Ps. 62:1-5)
- We Hope Purposefully for His Peace (Ps. 62:5-8)
- We Listen Persistently for His Voice (Ps. 62:9-12)

"We all face troubles, illness, and death — but what sets believers apart is that our hope is in God." — Dr. Joseph Shao

In a world full of uncertainty, may we continue to anchor our hope in the Lord, trusting Him alone as our rock and our salvation.

IN PHOTOS: BSOP at the 3rd Chinese Public Theology Symposium

From July 14–16, 2026, Biblical Seminary of the Philippines was represented at The 3rd Chinese Public Theology Symposium: Plurality & Public Theology, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A paper titled 神超越界限的怜悯:从悲悯神学的视角重读约拿书 ("God's Transcendent Mercy: Re-reading the Book of Jonah from the Perspective of a Theology of Compassion") was presented on behalf of BSOP, offering a fresh reading of the Book of Jonah through the lens of a theology of compassion.

We are grateful for the opportunity to engage with fellow scholars and church leaders from across the region, wrestling together with how public theology can speak into our plural societies today. May these conversations continue to shape how we read Scripture and serve our communities!

Presenters from BSOP: M.Div. student, Zipporah Tang & faculty, Dr. Bin Kang.
