Antithrombotic therapy is the medical treatment used to prevent the formation or recurrence of blood clots, which can cause serious medical conditions such as stroke and heart attack. It includes the use of medications such as anticoagulants (blood thinners), antiplatelet agents (drugs that reduce platelet activation and aggregation), and thrombolytic agents (drugs that dissolve blood clots). Antithrombotic therapy is commonly used in patients with conditions such as atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and coronary artery disease. The choice and duration of treatment depend on the patient's individual risk factors and medical history.
