π‘ What is interoception?
Interoception is a body sense that is important but lesser known. It helps us notice and understand signals inside our own bodies - like feeling hungry, thirsty, tired, needing the toileting, and even pain.
This sense helps us keep our body in balance, manage our emotions, and feel connected to ourselves and the people around us.
π Research shows that Autistic people experience interoception differences more often than non-autistic people (Zachary et al., 2023). Just like our other senses, Autistic people may be extra-sensitive (hyper-) or less sensitive (hypo-) to what is happening inside our body.
This means we may find it hard to notice body signals, feel body signals too strongly, or mix them up with emotions β for example, not being sure if weβre feeling uncomfortable because weβre hungry or because weβre anxious.
These differences can affect many parts of daily life, and have a big impact on our physical health, emotional wellbeing, and how we connect with others.

[ID: Against a magenta background with the Reframing Autism logo in the top left corner and the knotwork logo located in the lower right corner is an infographic titled, 'How Interoception Varies in Autistic Individuals'. Beneath are white text boxes with six points which state: Challenges in recognising basic needs; e.g., hunger, thirst or needing to use the bathroom, Emotional regulation - Difficulty in connecting internal physical sensations with emotions, Challenges with reflecting on oneβs thoughts and feelings (Introspection), Heightened or diminished experiences of pain, Difficulty in identifying and describing emotions (Alexithymia), Interoception differences can make it harder for Autistic individuals to pick up on social cues.]

Theraputty is a versatile, hand-exercise tool commonly used in occupational therapy. It is especially helpful for children and adults recovering from hand injuries or those with conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, or sensory processing disorders.
Here are the key benefits of using theraputty:
πΉ 1. Improves Hand Strength
Theraputty exercises target the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the hand, helping improve grip, pinch, and overall hand strength. This is particularly useful in rehabilitation from stroke, surgery, or injury.
πΉ 2. Enhances Fine Motor Skills
By manipulating the putty (e.g., rolling, squeezing, pinching), users develop better dexterity, coordination, and precision, which are essential for tasks like writing, buttoning, or using scissors.
πΉ 3. Increases Range of Motion
Stretching and kneading the putty can reduce stiffness and increase flexibility in the fingers, hands, and wrists, especially helpful for individuals with joint issues or post-surgery recovery.
πΉ 4. Supports Sensory Integration
Theraputty offers a tactile and proprioceptive sensory experience, which can be calming or stimulating for children with autism or sensory processing challenges. It can help regulate their sensory needs and improve focus.
πΉ 5. Promotes Stress Relief
The repetitive motions of squeezing and molding theraputty have a soothing, stress-reducing effect, making it a good tool for emotional regulation and anxiety reduction.
πΉ 6. Customizable Resistance Levels
Theraputty is available in different color-coded resistances (soft to firm), allowing therapists to match the difficulty to the userβs strength and gradually increase resistance as improvement occurs.
πΉ 7. Encourages Bilateral Coordination
Using both hands simultaneously to manipulate the putty helps strengthen bilateral coordination, which is vital for daily living tasks.
πΉ 8. Motivating and Engaging
Theraputty can be fun and motivating, especially for children. Embedding small objects (like beads or coins) inside the putty adds a playful challenge that encourages participation and goal-oriented movement.
