The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) season officially started on Saturday, according to PAGASA.

In compliance with the recent directives issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10) and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC-X) regarding the latest climate advisory and the ongoing monitoring of weather anomalies in the country, the public is hereby informed that the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) has officially raised the ENSO Alert and Warning System status from a standard WATCH to a full EL NIÑO ALERT.

According to the latest meteorological data and expert climate models, there is a 79% probability of El Niño emerging during the June-July-August 2026 season, with a high likelihood that these conditions will persist well into early 2027.

While a warm phase is steadily developing over the Pacific, its preliminary effects are already being recorded on the ground. Recent regional monitoring shows that Region X is currently experiencing tangibly dry conditions, with several major provinces across Northern Mindanao already feeling the initial strain of a shifting climate.

In view thereof, all residents, barangays, offices, institutions, agricultural stakeholders and other concerned sectors are advised to undertake precautionary and preparedness measures to mitigate the possible effects of El Niño, including but not limited to the following:

• Practice responsible and efficient water utilization and conservation;

• Implement energy saving and conservation measures;

• Closely monitor updates, forecasts, and advisories issued by DOST-PAGASA and other concerned government agencies;

• Ensure preparedness for possible drought, water shortage, extreme heat conditions, and other related environmental impacts;

• Require all personnel conducting field work and outdoor operations to observe proper health and safety precautions due to rising temperatures; and

• Coordinate with local government authorities and concerned agencies for appropriate response, actions and contingency measures.

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperative in all government efforts aimed at ensuring public safety, environmental protection, and disaster preparedness during the duration of the El Niño phenomenon.

For information and guidance, all concerned are advised to regularly monitor official announcements and advisories issued by DOST-PAGASA, DENR-10, the RDRRMC-X, and the Local Government Unit.
