UCNHS English Department Kicks Off National Reading Month 2025
By: SPJ Evangelista
Urdaneta City National High School (UCNHS) English Department officially opened its annual National Reading Month Celebration on November 17, 2025, carrying the theme “Reading is a Bridge to a Hopeful Tomorrow.” The month-long event aims to strengthen students’ appreciation for reading as a lifelong skill.
Grade 7 English Department launched the festivities with activities such as the Spelling Bee, Readers’ Theater, and Film Viewing at the school library. More activities are set to be announced, with teachers assuring that all events will be “engaging, meaningful, and inspiring.”
Grade 7 student Ronstar S. Orallo (7-SPJ Plaridel) emphasized the value of reading, “It is an instrument used in daily life.” English teacher, Maria Corazon J. Lim, shared that the department remains confident that students will enjoy the line-up, made possible through the efforts of the English teachers, Head Teacher Mrs. Gemma Marie B. Baltazar, and the support of school principal Mr. Antonino Rafanan. Grade 7 teachers also introduced Film Viewing as a fundraising activity for future literature events.
Grade 8 teachers initiated a Freedom Wall to hone writing skills and encourage emotional expression. Students also participated in busking and bookmark making, along with contests such as Story Retelling, Jazz Chant, Oral Interpretation, Spelling, and Read-a-thon.
The excitement continued as the Grade 9 Corinthians and Grade 9 SPS Elorde held their classroom eliminations. In BEFF 3 Room 303, Corinthians students Pauline Antonette and Wilbur Suazo competed in Poster Making, with Pauline writing, “Reading is a passport to countless adventure.” Both students agreed that reading “Nakaka-dagdag knowledge at vocabulary para sa pang araw-araw.”
In Room 302, SPS Elorde held its Essay Writing Elimination and prepared contestant Jeanelle Aira Bustillo for the Declamation Competition. As a first-time participant, Jeanelle shared that reading helps “to broaden vocabulary and to know more.” She prepared by studying declamation techniques through social media.
Meanwhile, Grade 10 students showcased creativity through their “Unforgettable Line” Corridor Exhibit along the BEFF V building. Other Grade 10 activities include the Food Expo, Advocacy Filming, Quiz Bee, and the final display of students’ favorite book quotations.
Grade 10 adviser, Mr. Danico Julio Salvador expressed his enthusiasm for the school’s reading culture, stating: “Reading does not only build knowledge—it builds character. Every activity this month is designed to make students discover themselves through the stories they read.”
These elimination rounds were designed to carefully select the best representatives for the upcoming school-wide competitions, showcasing the dedication of students and teachers as they prepare for bigger stage and for the culminating activity on November 28, 2025.
With various eliminations and showcases now underway, the National Reading Month celebration continues to highlight the dedication, creativity, and talent of UCNHS students. As the month progresses, the school looks forward to more inspiring performances and meaningful engagements that strengthen its commitment to a vibrant reading culture.
