Faculty members of Urdaneta City University attended the training workshop titled “SMART Syllabus: Strategic Mapping and Refinement of Teaching Syllabi,” on 19-20 May 2026. The workshop focused on curriculum development, sustainability integration, and learner-centered instruction, and aimed to strengthen educators’ capacity to design Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) syllabi aligned with institutional standards, flexible learning principles, and current educational demands.

University officials expressed their support for the training workshop through messages from Dr. Josephine Lambinicio, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Atty. Michael Henry Sevilleja, Vice President for Administrative Affairs.

The first training session, “Anatomy of an OBE Syllabus,” was delivered by Dr. Greg T. Pawilen, Professor at the Department of Human and Family Development Studies, College of Human Ecology, UPLB. Dr. Pawilen discussed the essential components of an OBE syllabus and the principles of outcomes-based curriculum design.

This was followed by a session on constructive alignment, where Dr. Pawilen highlighted the importance of aligning learning outcomes, course content, teaching strategies, and assessment methods to improve instructional coherence and student learning outcomes. Participants gained practical insights into curriculum mapping and the development of learner-centered instructional plans.

The afternoon workshop on syllabus development and packaging was facilitated by Dr. Jenielyn T. Padrones, UPLB OIDHE Director and Professor at the Institute of Renewable Natural Resources, College of Forestry and Natural Resources, UPLB. During the hands-on workshop, participants redesigned and refined their existing syllabi based on the concepts and frameworks discussed during the lectures. The day concluded with group presentations and peer feedback sessions facilitated by Dr. Pawilen and Dr. Padrones.

On the second day, the workshop focused on the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the alignment of digital tools with learning outcomes. The session was delivered by Dr. Christian Leubert C. Milambiling, Assistant Professor ay the Institute for Governance and Rural Development, College of Public Affairs and Development, UPLB. Dr. Milambiling discussed the use of digital platforms, learning management systems, collaborative applications, and data visualization tools in designing, delivering, and assessing SDG-aligned learning experiences.

Following the lecture, participants engaged in a workshop on integrating digital tools and SDGs in syllabi, facilitated by Dr. Milambiling and Dr. Padrones. During the workshop, participants revised and enhanced their syllabi by incorporating sustainability-focused content, learning activities, digital learning tools, and assessment methods aligned with OBE and Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) principles.

The workshop concluded with final presentations and peer review sessions, where participants presented their revised syllabus outputs and received feedback for refinement.

Through the two-day workshop, participants were encouraged to view syllabus development not merely as a compliance requirement, but as a strategic and reflective process that promotes competency-based learning, sustainability, innovation, and student-centered education in higher education institutions.
