On April 24, 2026, University of Cagayan Valley reached a significant juncture in its quality assurance journey with the successful conclusion of the British Standards Institution (BSI) audit. This process reinforces our institution's position as one that does not merely meet standards but strives to redefine them

During the Exit Conference held at the CVP Function Hall, the BSI auditors highlighted our institutional dedication to quality through the lens of continuous improvement and a unified mission. Armed with these professional insights, University of Cagayan Valley is better equipped than ever to refine its pedagogical standards and advance toward a future defined by excellence and a renewed sense of purpose.

𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘?
Araw ng Kagitingan, or the Day of Valor, is an annual observance held every April 9 to honor the immense courage of Filipino and American soldiers during World War II? This date specifically marks the Fall of Bataan in 1942, following a grueling campaign against invading Japanese forces. While the day serves as a tribute to heroic resistance, it also solemnly commemorates the beginning of the Bataan Death March, one of the most harrowing chapters of the war in the Pacific.
The march involved approximately 76,000 prisoners of war—consisting of 66,000 Filipinos and 10,000 Americans—who were forced to endure a brutal 66-mile (106 km) trek from the southern tip of the Bataan Peninsula to San Fernando, Pampanga. Throughout the journey, which lasted between five to ten days, captives faced extreme physical abuse, including beatings and executions, under unsanitary and exhausting conditions. Following the march, the prisoners were transported by cramped railcars to Capas before walking the final distance to Camp O’Donnell, a former training center turned internment camp.
The human cost of this event was devastating. While exact figures vary, it is estimated that between 5,000 and 10,000 soldiers perished during the march itself due to violence, starvation, and exhaustion. The tragedy continued long after the arrival at the camp, where an additional 26,000 Filipinos and 1,500 Americans died from disease and continued mistreatment. Today, the commemoration stands as a formal reminder of the sacrifices made by these troops and the enduring spirit of bravery shown in the face of overwhelming adversity.

𝐅𝐔𝐍 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐓 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐘 | 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀

𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘?
In 1971, founders Gordon Bowker, Jerry Baldwin, and Zev Siegl collaborated with artist Terry Heckler to establish a brand identity that captured the seafaring history of early coffee traders and the adventurous spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Bowker, a writer by trade, initially suggested the name "Pequod" from Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. However, this was rejected due to concerns that the phonetic sound of the name would be unappealing to customers.
The team shifted their focus to words beginning with "st," which were believed by advertising specialists to convey a sense of power and stability. This search led them to an old mining map of the Cascade Range and Mount Rainier, where they discovered a camp named Starbo. This name immediately reminded the founders of Starbuck, the steadfast and moral first mate aboard the Pequod. While the literary character was known for his discipline rather than indulgence, the founders felt the name perfectly evoked the "romance of the high seas."
Today, the name has transcended its literary origins to become a global household staple. Although the connection to Moby-Dick was largely a result of phonetic branding strategy and coincidence, it successfully melded the company’s roots in Seattle with a sense of maritime tradition. Over five decades later, the brand and its iconic siren logo have become as recognizable as the landmarks that inspired its creation, effectively turning a minor literary character into a symbol of modern coffee culture.
