Stanning Our Way to Ruin

The Philippines has officially stopped being an electorate and started being a giant, messy fandom. Voting has been abandoned in favor of subscribing. We buy the merch, defend our biases, and act like unpaid PR managers for people who wouldn't know our names if we stood in front of them. In the wake of the spectacular UniTeam implosion, the country is left scrambling after the ugly, public divorce that left every fan choosing sides. Honestly speaking, this ridiculous display looks less like a democracy and more like a toxic fandom convention.

Now, the country is split into three foundations that treat every hearing like an interesting movie. The weirdest part is how much we’ve started to treat these politicians like K-pop idols or anime characters. When the news broke in late 2025 about the ICC proceedings against the former President, his die-hard supporters didn't talk about international law. They talked about betrayal and loyalty, they ran to social media apps, claiming that Duterte is a frail, old man who’s teetering on the edge of life and death, like they were defending a misunderstood protagonist in a drama.

Meanwhile, the UniTeam foundation is stuck in this awkward middle ground, trying to project stability while the very alliance that put them in power is burning down behind them. Then you have the Leni crowd, still holding onto that “moral high ground” and losing their minds over every small interaction—like that surreal moment when President Marcos showed up in Naga wearing pink socks. It’s all very entertaining content, but none of it actually helps us.

Here’s the thing about stanning a politician: it makes us stupid. The danger of stan culture is that it makes us blind. When you’re a fan, you’re not allowed to be a critic. If your fave does something objectively terrible or, in this case, fails to fix the skyrocketing price of rice and electricity, your brain starts doing gymnastics to justify it. We’ve traded the boring, necessary work of holding people accountable for the cheap dopamine hit of a savage clapback on social media. We’re so busy defending the politician that we’ve completely forgotten to demand the results. A leader isn't your parent, your boss, or your idol–they’re an employee. And right now, the employees are spending more time on their branding than on their actual jobs.

As we start looking toward the 2028 elections, we really need to snap out of it. A functioning democracy isn't supposed to feel like a war between fandoms on the internet. It doesn't matter if your candidate has the best aesthetic, the best rallies, or the best social media posts if the economy is still a nightmare. A fan ignores the flaws to protect the idol’s image, but a proper citizen points out the flaws because they actually want the country to work. Maybe it’s time we stop looking for a main character to save us and start looking for a public servant that’s willing to do the single thing that they’re supposed to–serve.

𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 | After a four-year hiatus, Tuguegarao City Science High School (TCSHS) brought back its scouting tradition through “SIGLA: Investiture-cum-Camporal” on February 6 and 7, 2026.

The event began with an Investiture Ceremony to formally induct new scouts as official members of the TCSHS Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Outfit 032.

Council Scout Executive, SL Alfredo F. Javier Jr., LT, attended the program alongside faculty members and advisers SL Marjorie Cabria and SL Catherine Alariao to show their support.

Following the ceremony, the scouts participated in lectures and the Camporal, where they stayed overnight at the school to sharpen their skills by experiencing camp-style activities.

“We surely had our challenges during the preparation period, but we’re just glad we made it work and that the scouts felt the joy we envisioned,” Outfit 032 officer, Freiane Manuel, said.

The event was organized by the officers of Outfit 032 and ended successfully yesterday.

𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒆𝒅, 𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑬𝒅𝒖

Every document begins with an opening remark. “To Sir Eduardo C. Dela Rosa: Greetings! This is the final letter from Tugsay to you, the esteemed principal who served from February 2023 to January 2026.”

𝐒𝐢𝐫, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭

When Sir Eduardo first stepped into the crowded hallways of Tuguegarao City Science High School, his presence naturally filled the space with genuine warmth. It did not take long before he was fondly called “Edu,” which is a name that seemed destined to stand for “Education.” Throughout his term, he introduced a definition of leadership that many in the school community could confidently testify to.

On January 19, teachers, staff, and students gathered to celebrate his birthday and hold a heartfelt send-off program. In honor of his disciplined and sincere leadership, students from each year level presented performances prepared especially for him, while faculty members shared their encouraging and appreciative messages.

The moment stirred deep emotions among the Tugsay community as they looked ahead to Sir Eduardo’s continued personal and professional journey in the field of education.

𝐄𝐝𝐮, 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭

Whether standing at the podium or seated on the black leather chair reserved for his position, Sir Eduardo always welcomed those who sought his guidance with open arms. Be it a young dreamer or a fellow educator, he remained an authoritative yet compassionate leader.

To the school community, he was more than a principal; he was a father figure admired for his calm and gentle character.

“He rarely gets angry because he believes in all of us. He never doubted our potential and capabilities,” shared Sir Eliseo Peña, the SSLG adviser, in an interview.

Students recalled how approachable Sir Eduardo was when it came to project proposals, competitions, and innovative ideas that helped the school grow. A firm believer in holistic development, he consistently supported students in both academics and extracurricular pursuits.

“Kids, did you enjoy it?” He would often ask at the end of school events hosted by various youth organizations. Paired with his sweetest smile, the question reminded everyone that joy had a place in learning even amid academic pressure.

And of course, one should never forget to ask him for a photo. Sir Eduardo would gladly pose with his iconic expression, where he tucks his hands under his chin.

Might as well, invite him to dance along to the music playing through the speakers. He would make sure to never miss a beat.

𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐟𝐟

As Sir Eduardo walked through the crowded hallways for the last time, the school embraced his amiable yet monumental presence once more. His influence was etched into the minds of students, the hearts of the staff, and the institution he helped shape.

A leader who remained calm and humble paved countless pathways for others to follow in their own journeys.

“This is not a goodbye, but a see-you-later,” remarked SSLG President Allyna Guillermo in her speech.

Every document ends with a signature—except this one. Instead of ink on paper, it was engraved in the hearts of those who walked the same hallways as him.

After the recently concluded November Mass and Bible Study of TCSHS, prepared by the Kaagapay and HI-Y Club for the Academic Year 2025-2026, SCRIBES went on to ask students about their takeaways and reflections, shedding light on the role of faith in shaping their journey.

The bible study session centered on the importance of having a positive mind, and how thoughts influence actions and character amidst challenges.

Meanwhile, in the November Mass, the Mass emphasized the importance of vocation and its three types: the religious life, married life, and single blessedness.
