| 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗦𝗟𝗧 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁: Justice Ramon Paul L. Hernando’s Journey of Law and Public Service

For our next Louisian Success Story (LSS), we turn the spotlight to a Louisian whose journey from the classrooms of St. Louis to the Supreme Court of the Philippines has been shaped by years of legal practice, judicial service, teaching, and public service.

Meet Associate Justice Ramon Paul L. Hernando, a proud alumnus of St. Louis High School of Tuguegarao, Class of 1982, and sole recipient of the Natatanging Cagayano Award in the 2019 Dangal ng Lahing Cagayano, whose career has taken him from Tuguegarao to different levels of the Philippine justice system and eventually to the country’s highest court.

Born in Tuguegarao City on August 27, 1966, Justice Hernando completed his elementary education at Tuguegarao East Central School from 1972 to 1978 before entering St. Louis High School of Tuguegarao, now the University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao (USLT).

He later earned his Bachelor of Arts in Literature from the University of Santo Tomas in 1986 and his Bachelor of Laws from San Beda College of Law in 1990. His legal career began with positions in the offices of Supreme Court Justices Edgardo L. Paras and Florenz D. Regalado before he served as a State Prosecutor at the Department of Justice from 1998 to 2003.

His judicial career followed. He served as Presiding Judge of the Regional Trial Court of San Pablo City from 2003 to 2006 and as an RTC Judge in Quezon City from 2006 to 2010. On February 16, 2010, he was appointed Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals. Eight years later, on October 10, 2018, he joined the Supreme Court as its 180th member, at the age of 52 thereby making him one of the youngest appointees in the history of the Supreme Court.
