Unheard in the Classroom: Teachers’ Truths Behind the Data - A Plea from a Nobody
by: Sir Rodrigo C. Clarito Jr.

The call for educational reform in the Philippines has never been louder, and as a teacher, I find myself both hopeful and weary. I am grateful for the Deped’s renewed commitment to upskilling teachers and addressing learning loss, as emphasized by Secretary Angara. The push for curriculum reform and teacher education is indeed a step in the right direction, and I support these initiatives with all my heart.

Yet, beneath the surface of policy announcements and statistical reports, there are truths that often remain unheard - truths from the very classrooms where reforms are meant to take root. Too frequently, teachers are seen as mere implementers of top-down mandates, rather than as agents of transformation with invaluable insights and lived experience. We are asked to fix a system that, in many ways, has failed both us and our students, all while carrying the weight of unrealistic expectations and limited support.

Despite being at the forefront of every reform, teachers’ voices are rarely given space in decision-making. Our daily struggles-overcrowded classrooms, insufficient materials, and the emotional toll of caring for students beyond academics-are often managed quietly, sometimes vented only among ourselves as a way to cope. We are expected to be resilient, to go above and beyond, even as our own well-being and professional dignity are sidelined.

What is most disheartening is the growing mistrust in the data that shapes policy. When figures are adjusted to meet targets rather than reflect reality, it undermines both accountability and the potential for genuine progress. The lack of authentic engagement with teachers on the ground perpetuates a cycle where reforms are disconnected from the realities they aim to address.

This is not just about teacher welfare-it is about the integrity of our education system. Sustainable solutions require honest leadership, credible data, and, most importantly, the inclusion of teachers’ voices in shaping the path forward. We are not asking for praise or pity. We are asking to be heard, to be trusted, and to be empowered as true partners in reform.

I may be “a nobody” in the grand scheme, but I speak for many who quietly bear the burdens and hopes of our nation’s classrooms. If we are to build an education system that truly serves our learners, let us start by listening to those who know them best.
