“The Self-Offering of Jesus”
Did the killing of Jesus Christ save us?
Definitely not, since it was not the killing of Jesus, which is an act of sinful men, that saved us from the gates of hell but it was HIS DEATH. His death which is his self-offering and act of obedience to the Father’s will. As St. Paul said, “For just as through the disobedience of one person the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of one the many will be made righteous” (Rom. 5:19).
If anyone maligns, then, this self-offering of Jesus and say that it is unimpressive, this person only reveals his ignorance. He does not see the reason why Jesus had to endure a scene where the people wag their heads, curl their lips in scorn, turn up their noises and sarcastically say in his face, “He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Messiah of God … If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself” (Lk. 23:35-36). This person fails to understand that it was love that led and kept Jesus on the Cross. He could have called lightning and burned all the non-believers, but He did not. His love kept Him on the cross until the end for he knew that only in obeying the Father’s will and dying on the cross that man can be justified again before the Father.
Today, as we celebrate the entry of Jesus to the Holy City, where He is about to suffer and die on the cross to destroy death and sin and restore us to the Father and his kingdom, may we remember His love for us and renounce also ourselves and die to our sins.
Did the death of Jesus Christ save us? Definitely YES!
