A multi-awarded public servant, community organizer, and broadcast journalist, Sen. Risa Hontiveros served as the representative of Akbayan Partylist from 2004 to 2010. She was first elected to the Senate in 2016 and was later re-elected by voters to a new Senate term in 2022.
Hontiveros has personally championed 25 new landmark laws, including the historic Expanded Maternity Leave Law (RA 11210), which gives working moms 105 days of paid maternity leave, and the Mental Health Law (RA 11036), which provides the first legal framework over mental health care in the country.
The "Safe Spaces Act," officially known as Republic Act No. 11313, was signed into law on April 17, 2019. Sen. Risa Hontiveros created this bill to shield all Filipino people from all types of harassment, regardless of their ancestry, age, religion, or sexual orientation.
We frequently get a deep sense of despair whenever we read or hear about acts of sexual harassment and assault because those people did not deserve to go through such a terrible ordeal. When the victim is being interviewed by the media to let us all know about the terrible tragedy they have endured, imagine how upset the victim is as they plead for justice and assistance. That sexual harassment and violence are still prevalent in today's culture are heartbreaking.
