Another major project led by Engr. Karlfred Junne A. Doydora, titled โ€œPrototyping and Pilot Testing of Modified Cacao Bean Grinder Machine,โ€ has set a meaningful milestone for the institutionโ€”advancing cacao processing efficiency in the region.

Funded with โ‚ฑ1,439,916.00 through the DOST IX Local Grants-in-Aid Program, this initiative aims to develop and pilot a modified cacao bean grinder tailored for local industry needs. The project targets long-standing bottlenecks in cacao production by offering improved grinding technology that delivers higher productivity, better quality, and reduced processing time.

This effort strengthens the cacao sector, supports farmers and processors, and contributes to elevating the Philippinesโ€™ competitiveness in the global cacao market.

The College of Engineering, JRMSUโ€“Tampilisan Campus, officially launched the extension project โ€œAnchoring Sustainable Adoption of Next Gen Seaweed Harvestingโ€ and turned over the seaweed harvester to OLUTAMASEFARMCO in Paradise Hill, Olutanga.

The event highlighted the MOA signing, the formal turnover of the machine, and the commitment of JRMSU and local partners to strengthen seaweed farming through reliable, homegrown innovation. With this technology, farmers are set to benefit from improved efficiency and sustainable production.

A milestone for community development and local industry advancement.

Leading the "Prototyping and Pilot Testing of Modified Cacao Bean Grinder Machine" project, Engr. Karlfred Junnee A. Doydora has successfully obtained โ‚ฑ1,439,916.00 in funding from the DOST IX Local Grants-in-Aid Program. This initiative builds on previous research by former ABE students recognized in national competitions.

This project builds upon the success of a previous research endeavor by Engr. Doydora's former ABE students, Claire Lumasay Uttoh and Hernan Espacio Refugio. Their work on a cacao bean grinder machine garnered recognition as a Regional Winner for RICE 2021 and a National Finalist in the National Invention Contest and Exhibit by DOST-TAPI in 2022 (NICE 2022). This latest grant is a testament to the continued innovation and dedication of the ABE Department, demonstrating their commitment to translating student research into tangible solutions for the community.

The "Prototyping and Pilot Testing of Modified Cacao Bean Grinder Machine" project aims to further develop and refine the existing cacao bean grinder machine design. This will involve prototyping and pilot testing to enhance its efficiency, functionality, and overall performance. The project's success has the potential to significantly benefit the cacao farming industry in the region by providing a cost-effective and efficient solution for processing cacao beans.

โ€œMy first DOST project proposal was rejected, leaving me heartbroken and tempted to quit research. But after a year of perseverance and revisions, it was finally approved! This experience taught me that setbacks are just stepping stones on the path to success. Never give up on your dreams, even when faced with delays. Delayed but not deniedโ€, Mr. Doydora emphasized.

The ABE Department's commitment to innovation continues to inspire future students, and JRMSU-TC congratulates Engr. Doydora and his team for this achievement.

The Unit Head of Extension in JRMSU-TC, Mr. Alfredo Q. Liboon Jr., bagged best paper presenter award in the 2nd International Multidisciplinary Research-Based Extension Conference (IMREC) held at DAP Conference Center, Tagaytay City on October 15-18, 2024.

His presented research-based extension titled โ€œTransforming the Coconut Industry in Zamboanga del Norte: Enhancing Efficiency with the SAFitek Coconut Dehusker,โ€ explores innovative methods to improve productivity and sustainability in the coconut sector. The conference, held under the theme โ€œEmpowering Communities through Innovative Extension Practice: Bridging Gaps, Transforming Lives, Inspiring Change,โ€ recognized his work for its potential to revolutionize coconut industry practices.

A wave of innovation swept through Western Mindanao as two pivotal events showcased the regionโ€™s growing commitment to technological advancement and entrepreneurship. Held at Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in Zamboanga City on November 19-20, 2024, the Technology Forum and the Start it Right: Programs and Services for Startups program featured the power of collaboration, creativity, and support systems in driving progress.

The first day, November 19th, highlighted the Technology Forum, organized by the Western Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESMAARRDEC), which featured two groundbreaking technologies developed by students from Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) โ€“ Tampilisan Campus. Presented by Engr. Karlfred Junnee A. Doydora and Mr. Yhebron J. Lagud, the HarvAT Seaweed Harvester and SAFitek Coco Dehusker showcased practical innovations aimed at improving efficiency in seaweed farming and coconut dehusking. The speakers shared their inspiring journey from ideation to commercialization, emphasizing how research and determination can turn challenges into opportunities for agricultural progress.

Engr. Doydora expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to present the SAFitek Coco
Dehusker, the very first Utility Model of JRMSU. โ€œJust immensely grateful for the opportunity to present the coconut dehusker, the very first Utility Model of our University. A special thanks to WESMAARDEC for inviting me as a resource person, and to the key officials of the University: Tampilisan Campus Director Dr. Merlyn N. Luza, VPRDE Dr. Rizza Bagalanon, and the University President Dr. Maria Rio Abdon-Naguit for allowing me to present the technology," he said.

He highlighted the innovationโ€™s significance, saying, "This experience enabled me to serve as a conduit for introducing this simple yet very impactful technology to potential investors, adopters, and an attentive audience. It marked a significant step forward for the coconut industry, particularly benefiting coconut farmers by making their work safer, easier, and more efficient. The enthusiasm and interest shown by the attendees were incredibly motivating, and I am excited about the impact this innovation will have on the industry to be a reality. This activity just stamped JRMSUโ€™s leading role in innovation within the region."

On November 20, the Start It Right: Programs and Services for Startups program, organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region IX, focused on empowering startups. Prof. Yhebron J. Lagud, representing the DOST-JRMSU Sidlak Technology Business Incubator (TBI), outlined the support systems available for emerging entrepreneurs.

"This generation is very lucky because we have technology business incubators all over the Philippines that will help you build and launch your business venture. It gives you better options in life aside from being an employee to being a CEO in your own company," Prof. Lagud said.

He encouraged students to explore opportunities in entrepreneurship, saying, "My advice to our students, since this is a new thing in the University, at least join events in the Sidlak TBI for you to experience and learn what it takes to establish your own business venture - try to take the least path traveled, you might enjoy it, who knows, you will be the first homegrown startups that will be launched in the market."

Both events reflect the dedication to innovation and entrepreneurship. By bridging technological advancements with extensive support systems, the region continues to lay the foundation for sustainable growth and transformative solutions.

Under the advisory of Engr. Engineer Karlfred Junnee Doydora (BSABE Associate Dean), Rowena Rojo and Gailmarie Tacgosโ€™ undergraduate thesis: Prototyping and Pilot Testing of Seaweed Harvester secures approval of funding before the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) amounting to 3.7 million pesos.

In a fierce competition that saw 287 outstanding proposals, this visionary initiative stood out and captured the attention of the National Innovation Council Executive Technical Board (NIC-ETB) through careful deliberation and a competitive evaluation process pursuant to National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), as highlighted in Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2023-01.

The knowledge and commitment of Engineer Karlfred Junnee Doydora, accompanied as well by the project members: Prof. Yhebron Lagud, Engr. Giezel Ansalan, and Engr. Rosemarie Ducoy (faculty members of BSABE department) whose leadership and mentoring have been crucial in establishing this innovative venture of Rowena Rojo and Gailmarie Tacgos, the innovators and masterminds behind this project.
