LOOK: The Provincial Health Office (PHO) has recorded 10 HIV cases among children below 15 years old, raising concerns over the increasing number of younger individuals testing positive for the virus in Cebu Province.
PHO Health Education and Promotion Officer Wilfredo Salgado said HIV infections are being detected among younger age groups, highlighting the need for intensified awareness, prevention, and early intervention efforts.
PHO data from January to November last year showed 390 people living with HIV in Cebu Province, with around 60 to 70 percent undergoing treatment. Updated figures for this year have yet to be released.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health data for the same period recorded 954 individuals who tested positive for HIV in Cebu Province, including the tri-cities. Male-to-male s*xual contact accounted for the largest share of transmissions with 629 cases, followed by male having s*x with males and females with 133 cases, male-to-female transmission with 118 cases, male injecting drug use with 29 cases, and four cases attributed to mother-to-child transmission.
Salgado noted that stigma surrounding HIV has lessened compared to previous years, which he attributed partly to changing attitudes among younger generations.
Ramon Mathew Basabe, co-founder of the Cebu Pride Movement, said the increasing number of reported cases may also reflect improved HIV awareness and prevention efforts, leading more individuals to voluntarily undergo testing.
Health officials continue to urge the public to practice safe behaviors, get tested regularly, and seek appropriate medical care to help prevent HIV transmission and ensure early treatment for those living with the virus.

Replace your toothbrush every 3months
What does this toothbrush have to do with your heart? A worn-out toothbrush isnβt very good at keeping your teeth clean and your gums healthy. And poor dental health has been linked to a higher risk for heart disease and high blood pressure. For a healthy smile (and to support a healthy heart), dentists recommend replacing toothbrushes every 3-4 months or more often if the bristles are matted or frayed.

No more feeding bottle beyond 6months
Putting a baby to bed with a bottle of milk may seem comforting, but it can increase the risk of early tooth decay β even in newly erupted teeth. When a baby falls asleep with a bottle, milk can pool around the teeth for hours.
Milk contains natural sugars (lactose), and bacteria in the mouth feed on these sugars, producing acids that attack tooth enamel. During sleep, saliva flow decreases, which means thereβs less natural protection against these acids. Over time, this can lead to βbaby bottle tooth decay.β
To protect your babyβs teeth, avoid putting them to bed with a bottle. If needed, offer water instead, and gently clean their gums and teeth before sleep. Early dental care helps build healthy habits that last a lifetime.
