Meet our National Artists for Literature!

Another prolific fictionist and essayist, Alejandro R. Roces played various roles in academia and public service, including serving as the secretary of education under President Diosdado Macapagal, where he emphasized the significance of folk customs and festivals. Roces's literary contributions include the acclaimed short story collection "Of C***s and Kites" and the insightful book "Fiesta,"which explores Philippine folk festivals. His works received recognition both locally and internationally, earning him prestigious awards such as the Rizal Pro Patria Award and the Tanging Parangal of the Gawad CCP para sa Sining. Roces's legacy continues to inspire writers and readers alike, cementing his position as a towering figure in Philippine literature. He was bestowed the honor as National Artist in 2003.
