The Benefits of Listening

Matagal na akong nasa broadcasting kung saan sinasay kami na bawal na bawal ang "dead air" o ang matagal na pause na walang maririnig o makikita ang listeners at viewers. Dapat palaging may nagsasalita, dapat palaging may aksyon. But away from the camera and the microphone, I have come to appreciate moments of quiet reflection and times when I will just sit and listen to others. Maraming benepisyo ang pakikinig. Kaya kung sanay ka na ikaw palagi ang bumabangka sa mga diskusyon, pagpupulong o kwentuhan diyan sa inyong opisina, may I suggest that every once in a while, you also pause and enjoy the art of listening.

Bakit nga ba tayo kailangang matutong makinig? Sa pagkaka-disenyo pa lang ng Diyos sa ating katawan, malalaman na natin kung ano ang mas madalas nating dapat gawin hindi ba? Dalawa ang ating tainga, isa lamang ang ating bibig. Para bang sinasabi sa atin, listen more and speak less. What are the benefits of listening more?
1) You gain wisdom by listening with understanding. Mas marami akong natututunan sa tuwing ako ay makikinig kaysa sa kung ako ang nagsasalita. Kahit sino pa ang iyong kausap, bata, matanda, may PhD o wala, tiyak na mayroon kang matututunan kung mayroon kang tainga at puso na marunong makinig. When you know how to listen, you earn the right to also be listened to when you speak.
2) Listening is an exercise in humility. Kapag ikaw ay totoong nakikinig upang unawain ang iba o matuto sa kanila, di ba't ito'y pagpapakita rin ng pagpapakumbaba? When you listen, you are giving value to the thoughts and ideas of other people. Ito'y pagkilala na hindi mo nalalaman ang lahat kaya kailangan mong makinig at matuto sa iba. Ang pakikinig sa iyong ka-trabaho, kaibigan o empleyado ay pagpapakita din ng kababaang-loob dahil naniniwala kang may karunungan at dagdag kaalaman silang maibabahagi.
3) Listen to God's word more and to the criticisms of others less. Kung may marapat tayong matutunang pakinggan, iyan ay ang Salita ng Diyos. Ang sabi sa Romans 10:17, "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." Listening to people's criticisms can be discouraging at times. Pero kung sa Salita ng Diyos tayo makikinig, tiyak na may matututunan kang bago palagi. God's Word, instructs and inspires, make it a habit to listen to and read His Word.
Grow in wisdom and humility by learning how to listen more. Maraming benepisyo ang pakikinig.
