Greens not Growing?

Here are some typical problems organic farmers have and their solutions for successful farming!

• Climate Change
Farmers may have to postpone planting if there is a lot of rain during the planting season, which will delay harvesting. Excessive rain can harm the soil by eliminating vital nutrients that support plant growth. Additionally, too much water causes mold and fungus in the soil, which can destroy crops.
Excessive water loss from plants due to high temperatures can result in wilting, stunted growth, and decreased production. Intense sunshine can also result in sunburn and harm plant tissues, aggravating the consequences of heat stress.

Solution: Apply fertilizers to reduce runoff, keep animals away of streams, and lessen runoff that is nutrient-rich. Improve pollination and cut back on chemical use to increase crop tolerance. Water regularly. Have a protection for intense heat.

• Insects, Viruses and Parasites
When weeds and other pests like viruses, bacteria, fungus, and insects compete with plants, it drastically reduces their output and, in rare cases, can completely kill a crop.

Solution: Create good soil to draw beneficial insects and ward against plant illnesses. Consult farmers or extension agents about plant-resistant cultivars. Plants should be properly spaced apart since too near planting restricts sunshine and airflow and too distant planting makes room for weeds and lowers yield. Plant when the weather is suitable since pests and illnesses have a seasonal cycle. The ideal planting period may be determined by keeping an eye on crop progress and consulting with other farmers.

• Poor yield
A crop's supply may be permanently reduced and costs raised if farmers decide to cultivate something else after several years of low crop output.

Solution: Take time to learn the land. Work with the weather. Plant High-Quality Seed. Know your pests. Irrigate Strategically.

"Spend less, Garden more!"

According to the Global Hunger Index Survey 2022, the Philippines ranked 69th out of 121 countries in terms of hunger and malnutrition. This highlights the need for the country to prioritize the improvement of agricultural productivity and efficiency while also implementing cost-saving measures to address food insecurity.

Now, with the nonstop growth of the population, the consequences of industrial agriculture have become one of the world's main concerns. The traditional wide-scale farming method of using herbicides and pesticides is causing harm to the environment and human health.

But how can we know if the food we eat was grown in contaminated soil with contaminated fertilizers, what pesticides and herbicides were used on it, whether it is genetically modified or not, whether it was irrigated with contaminated water, and whether it was grown sustainably?
The solution is: Let's grow our own!

What do we get from organic backyard farming?
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us appreciated the importance of home gardening and growing our own food. Baranggay Bulac, Talavera, Nueva Ecija, leads the way in promoting organic backyard farming to its people, providing them with fresh and healthy produce that is free from harmful chemicals and pesticides. By growing our own food, people in Barangay Bulac are working together to plant vegetables in their own backyards, saving money and promoting a healthier lifestyle for their families.

Let's work together to make nutritious food for a better future!

Healthy food, healthy soils, healthy plants, and healthy habitats are prioritized along with agricultural yield in organic farming. To enhance soil quality and increase organic soil matter, organic farmers use biological fertilizer inputs and management techniques including cover cropping and crop rotation. Organic farmers increase the amount of organic matter in the soil, which improves the soil's capacity to absorb water and lessens the effects of drought and flooding. Increased soil organic matter also aids in the soil's ability to take in and store the carbon and other nutrients required to develop healthy crops, which are then better equipped to fend off pests and illnesses.
