GCO Commences Drug Awareness Seminar

To strengthen awareness on the dangers of substance misuse, the Guidance and Counseling Office (GCO) spearheaded this yearโ€™s Drug Awareness Seminar.

The event highlighted three key topics: the different types of illegal and commonly misused substances, the physical effects of ingesting these drugs, and the legal consequences of involvement with illegal drugs.

A Question-and-Answer segment also formed part of the program, giving students the chance to raise concerns or satisfy their curiosity on matters related to substance misuse.

The seminar featured speakers Rezzie Bryan N. Ybaรฑez, Edzel M. Silanga, Joseph M. Pagaran, and Freddie R. Loctugan Jr. It was attended by STI School Administrator Jesa G. Camilan; Guidance Counselor Cleo C. Miraflor; Guidance Assistant Christine Ann B. Laride; the Peer Facilitators; and the BS Psychology interns from UM Tagum College, whose support helped ensure the eventโ€™s success.

The seminar was conducted in Rooms 101โ€“103 last November 21โ€“22, 2025.

Different Pleasures, Same Outcome: Drugs that Starts Fun, Ends in Harm

All types of dangerous drugs, whether legal or illegal, sell you a dream of pleasure, but behind the lies it tempts you, comes at the cost of your life.

Weโ€™ve seen pamphlets and warning signs of the physical damage it brings, but whatโ€™s not mentioned is the emotional toll it brings, not only to yourself, but everyone around you. Here are the psychological damage these substances cause:

1. Numbs Satisfaction
These drugs are designed to make you feel dependent on them, which makes you lose satisfaction in everything else in your life from essential pleasures like food, to social pleasures such as friends, family, and romance.

2. Losing Yourself Over Time
Drugs damage your ability to live normally, starting by causing constant anxiety, depression, and even making you see or hear things that arenโ€™t there. Over time, they take away your ability to think clearly, remember, stay rational, which results in aggressive behaviors.

3. Relationships Drifting Apart
โ€œDrugs not only damage your sense of self, but also everyone around you. Your friends, family, and partner may begin to lose trust in you as you exhibit dishonesty, temper problems, financial issues, and a growing disconnection from the people you love.

4. One Step Closer to Death
Drugs donโ€™t just deteriorate your physical healthโ€”they gaslight your brain into believing you need more. They convince you theyโ€™re the only thing you need, until one day, before you even realize it, youโ€™re alone, standing one step away from death.

If you or someone you know is struggling to let go of the temptations of drugs, STI Guidance Services is here to provide a safe space to share, help you break your dependence, and educate you about the effects of dangerous drugs.

Yesterday concludes the two-day Mental Health Awareness Seminar โ€œFinding the Calm in the Storm: Stress Management and Wellnessโ€, headed by school guidance counselor Ms. Cleo C. Miraflor and assisted by the school guidance assistant Ms. Christene Ann B. Laride.

The seminarโ€™s resource speaker, Ms. Rose Faith O. Tinay, RPm, CHRA, did not just taught students techniques in battling anxiety but also entailed a good lesson of how vital self-awareness is. As she highlighted, โ€œYou cannot tame the emotion if you cannot name itโ€, Ms. Tinay reminded us that itโ€™s okay to feel and understand why we felt it

Also, the seminarโ€™s success will not happen without the collective efforts of the student interns from UM Tagum College and the STI Tagum Peer Facilitators Club.
