Reminder to parents:

The rotavirus vaccine is an oral (swallowed) vaccine that protects infants from rotavirus, a highly contagious virus that causes severe diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration in young children.

​Before the vaccine was introduced, rotavirus was the leading cause of severe, dehydrating diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide.

​How It Is Given:
​Unlike most vaccines, the rotavirus vaccine is not a shot. It is given as liquid drops placed directly into the baby's mouth.

​Depending on the specific brand used, the vaccine is given in either a 2-dose or 3-dose series:
​Rotarix (RV1): Given in 2 doses (usually at 2 months and 4 months of age).
​RotaTeq (RV5): Given in 3 doses (usually at 2, 4, and 6 months of age).

​⚠️ Important Timing: The first dose must be given before a baby turns 15 weeks old, and the final dose must be completed by the time the baby is 8 months old.

​Why It Is Important
​While diarrhea might seem like a common childhood ailment, rotavirus can be incredibly severe. The vaccine is highly effective and provides several key benefits:
​Prevents Severe Illness: It prevents about 74% to 87% of all rotavirus cases and nearly 96% of severe cases.

​Reduces Hospitalizations: It drastically lowers the chances of a child needing intravenous (IV) fluids in the hospital due to extreme dehydration.

​Community Protection: By vaccinating infants, it reduces the overall circulation of the virus, protecting vulnerable newborns and older individuals as well.

​Common Side Effects
​The rotavirus vaccine is very safe, but some babies may experience mild, temporary side effects, including:
​Irritability or fussiness
​Mild, temporary diarrhea or vomiting

​If you are planning a vaccination schedule for an infant, your pediatrician can advise on the best timing and specific brand available.
