The Nursing Program at St. Mary’s College of Tagum, Inc. has recently contributed to advancing community health research with the publication of the article, 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘜𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘮 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘯 (𝘝𝘰𝘭. 6, 𝘕𝘰. 1, 2025).

The study, authored by 𝗠𝗶𝘇𝗽𝗮𝗵 𝗠. 𝗚𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘇, 𝗕𝗵𝗲𝗮 𝗝. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮, 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗟. 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗮𝗻, 𝗝𝘂𝘃𝗶𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗝. 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗮, 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗕. 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝗼𝗮𝗻 𝗔. 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘇𝗮𝗱𝗮, investigated the knowledge and attitudes toward antibiotic usage among residents in rural barangays of Tagum City, Davao del Norte. Using descriptive-correlational methods and adapted questionnaires, the researchers found that participants generally demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge about antibiotics and an average attitude toward their proper use.

Educational attainment was identified as the only demographic factor significantly influencing attitudes toward antibiotics, and there was a strong positive correlation between knowledge and attitude. These findings underscore the importance of tailored educational interventions and stewardship programs to promote responsible antibiotic usage in rural communities.

This experimental study, authored by 𝙆𝙞𝙖𝙧𝙖 𝙆𝙞𝙢 𝘾. 𝘽𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙝𝙖𝙮, 𝙆𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙣 𝙎𝙝𝙮𝙣𝙣𝙖 𝙈. 𝘼𝙣𝙜, 𝙃𝙖𝙯𝙚𝙡 𝙂𝙖𝙮𝙡𝙚 𝙍. 𝘿𝙪𝙡𝙖-𝙊𝙜𝙤𝙣, 𝙄𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙡 𝙇. 𝙋𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙧, 𝙇𝙝𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙚 𝙋. 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙖, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙅𝙤𝙖𝙣 𝘼. 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙯𝙖𝙙𝙖, assessed the antibacterial potential of turmeric leaf extract against E. coli, a primary causative agent of UTIs. The research applied three treatment groups: turmeric leaf extract (experimental), distilled water (negative control), and ciprofloxacin (positive control). Phytochemical analysis revealed flavonoids, tannins, and phenols in turmeric leaves, while alkaloids and saponins were absent.

Results showed no inhibition with distilled water (0.00 mm²), a moderate yet significant zone of inhibition for turmeric extract (698.13 mm²), and the highest inhibition for ciprofloxacin (1245.01 mm²). Statistical analysis confirmed significant differences among groups (p < 0.05), and pairwise comparisons highlighted the antibacterial promise of turmeric relative to controls. While ciprofloxacin remains the most effective, the findings suggest turmeric leaf extract has potential for future in-vivo studies, clinical applications, and formulation development.

SMCTI Student Researchers Seal International Publication

Proving excellence in the international arena, Marian researchers from Senior High School (SHS) program of the Basic Education Department (BED) recently achieved a significant research breakthrough with the publication of their study in the Sprin Journal of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (SJAHSS), an open-access journal released monthly by Sprin Publisher.

The paper, titled "Educator-Athlete Mentorship: Experiences of Secondary School Sports Coaches in Balancing Academic and Sports Responsibilities," aimed to unravel the struggles and coping mechanisms of the coaches in juggling their profession and athletic expertise.

Moreover, Kisha Abudiente, a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student, led the research team in pushing through the success of the qualitative phenomenological study that further examined the lived experiences of the secondary schools' teacher-coach in some private catholic institutions in Tagum City.

Alongside Abudiente, fellow researchers including Colleen Alexie Berido, J Chres Leigh Gamas, Christel Elwin Suarez, Trix Sur, Daniel Luis Abo-Abo, Karlo Eamon Alindajao, and Rheaven Christ Simbajon played their roles in the completion of the said study.

Meanwhile, with exceptional expertise in the field of Research and Academics, Research Adviser Mariel Acosta, LPT, MAED, served as the corresponding author in the newly published article.

"Through this research, it will awaken the institution to see the value of the teachers that they are not only limited to teaching inside the classroom setting, but are also capable of molding students beyond the academic corners," said Acosta in an exclusive interview.

Acosta also emphasized the transition of the teachers from conventional practices that will enable the students to understand the capabilities of the teachers, seeking the institution to protect the well-being of the said educators.

In history, Acosta already produced several student-researchers who shone in the international research websites after publishing their studies.

Bearing the pride of St. Mary's College of Tagum, Teacher Education Program, Cruda et al. presented their research entitled "A Discourse Analysis on Humor Employed in Philippine TV Shows", which has been officially accepted for oral presentation under the Futures of Education at the 1st Davao Sustainable Futures Conference 2024. The conference was held at the Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City, on October 29-30. The conference serves as an avenue for students to exchange views and ideas towards sustainable education.

Moreover, this achievement reflects the dedication, intellectual rigor, and research excellence upheld by the Teacher Education Program. It also highlights the pursuit of academic growth and contribution to the global educational conference. Indeed, this milestone proved that the future educators are not only competent in the classroom but also active contributors to the advancement of knowledge.

Through this benchmarking engagement, Dr. Mamayabay learned about Adamson University’s research culture, processes, and best practices, including strategies for research publication and faculty development.

Research Excellence of the Nursing Program

𝐒𝐌𝐂𝐓𝐈 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄 𝐗𝐈 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓

Two research entries from the Teacher Education Program of St. Mary’s College of Tagum, Inc. (SMCTI) represented the institution in the 𝗣𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘 𝗫𝗜 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 (𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆). With a total of at least 22 participating schools across the region, SMCTI earned distinction in both the oral and poster presentation categories.

In the Oral Presentation Category, the research of Sotelo et al. titled “𝑨𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝑭𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒔𝒚 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒎𝒔 𝑼𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒑’𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒆” was selected as one of the Top 5 Qualified Participants. The study, under the guidance of 𝐃𝐫. 𝐊𝐥𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐲, 𝐋𝐏𝐓, stood out for its theoretical foundation and in-depth analysis, earning the award for 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 – 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐲. The official speaker for the study was 𝐌𝐫. 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐔. 𝐒𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐨, whose confident and compelling delivery greatly contributed to the recognition received.

In the Poster Presentation Category, the research of Cruda et al. titled “𝑨 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝑯𝒖𝒎𝒐𝒓 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒚𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑻𝑽 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒔” was recognized as one of the Top 11 Qualified Participants, showcasing the group’s critical examination of language and humor in media. The study was mentored by Dr. Iris Billones, LPT, with Ms. Ivy Cruda serving as the official presenter.

The achievement was made possible through the support of YLO 4 Adviser, Ma’am Dinah Nival, LPT, MAED, together with Teacher Education faculty members Sir Bryan Gasoc, LPT and Ma’am Christine Dianne Magbanua, LPT, MAED, whose guidance strengthened the students’ research endeavors.

This recognition brings pride to 𝐒𝐭. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐦, 𝐈𝐧𝐜., affirming its commitment to research excellence and academic innovation. The success of the student-researchers and presenters continues to inspire the Teacher Education Program community to pursue excellence with passion, rigor, and creativity.
