𝗘𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗛’𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

Claiming the Philippines’ first-ever gold, Charles Devlin Ellazar Jr. secures a dominant knockout victory fueled by swift and aggressive strikes in the Junior High School Middleweight Kumite category at the Dream Karate Festival 2026 International Championship, held at Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Japan from July 18–19, 2026.

Marking the match with rapid punches, aggressive advances, and close-quarter kicks to keep the Japanese rival under constant pressure, Charles makes the most of his short stature to get inside and gain better positioning against the taller kicker, allowing him to control the match and land crucial hits.

Breaking through the opponent’s initial defenses, Charles immediately goes on the offensive, delivering a barrage of body punches, resulting in a back-and-forth exchange of kicks and a fierce clash for the lead.

Despite his opponent’s bursts of strikes, Charles lands decisive leg kicks while building momentum through swift punches, sapping the opposition’s speed and energy. The Japanese ace fights back by throwing strikes of his own, yet struggles to keep up with Charles’ assault, allowing him to seal the match as his rival falls, securing Charles the win by knockout.

“I knew I was competing against strong fighters, but I wouldn't let that stop me from reaching my goal. For my future matches, I need to improve my breathing so I don’t get gassed so easily from pressure.” He also added, “Karate means discipline, growth, and perseverance for me. Teaching me that it isn't about winning, but about learning from every experience.” He emphasized that the main challenge of karate lies beyond just the arena.

Guided by his coaches, Charles moves on to his next major championship in the 20th Asia Open Championship in Bali, Indonesia, where his ability to remain calm under overwhelming pressure and deliver aggressive attacks will prove valuable as he represents the Philippines once more.

𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 | 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲

It starts with a reviewer. Then the highlighters. Then the index cards. Then another reviewer. Then the sticky notes. Before you know it, your backpack is an endless sea of papers. Each pocket has something to memorize, each notebook holds five new pages of notes. The weight grows heavier each day, just as the daunting feeling of the exams does. Your backpack doesn’t need a complicated Notion timetable to know when exams are approaching. From the crumpled papers to the extra notebooks, it notices this difference, recognizing it as one thing—a sign. Exam season has arrived.

A regular Tuesday may need a pen and a notebook. On an ordinary Wednesday, students can still be found in the hallways, talking, laughing, and cracking jokes. But the backpack knows when Thursday becomes the day before an exam, and when Friday turns into a mental marathon. As each exam gets closer, pens and notebooks aren’t nearly enough. Every term needs to be highlighted, every concept must find its way to an index card, every subject needs a Gizmo deck. Instead of puns, students pester one another with “did you study?” But one thing’s for sure–your backpack doesn’t need to ask.

Amidst the growing weight of stacked messy reviewers, students are buried beneath ink and paper every night, pushing through their own hunger and exhaustion in pursuit of numbers that have become the measure of success. They start to mistake the stars on their papers for the ones out their window. Every night, their hands are tied under the pressure of becoming greater. Suddenly, the heavy backpack they carry is no longer the biggest challenge. Rather, the feeling inside grows heavier as the bag does.

But perhaps the load isn’t something to fear. After all, every highlighted concept, every reviewer, every bit of added weight, comes from a student who wants to do well. Perhaps, the backpack is something we have to keep holding on to, but not something we have to constantly fill up. Preparing for the term shouldn’t have to mean filling up every pocket until the straps hurt and threaten to snap. In every backpack, there should be enough room for eight hours of sleep, a comforting meal, and a moment to look outside.

As the exams edge nearer and the backpack gets a little heavier, let it serve as a reminder–not just to do better, but to take better care of the person who must carry it. Pack the highlighters, index cards, the other reviewer, and sticky notes–but make sure to leave room for yourself too. The stars on your paper can matter without replacing the ones in the night sky.

She emphasized that students need to be safe within their schools, going so far to say that members of the faculty ought to be careful with their own actions so as to not inspire learners to commit to horrible values.

Questions on accountability arise with every tragedy; whose responsibility really is it to cultivate values, the home or an institution? Spotlights are on every school as of now, as if asking if inside their halls, they tolerate such absurd mindsets, leading children to harm their fellow child.

Teachers are always regarded as secondary parents and role models, yet when students display foolish behavior, their reputations are at the forefront of blame. Educators are regarded as stepping stones to brighter and better futures, be that as it may, their influence starts and stops in the four corners of their classrooms, their reach rarely goes further than the boundaries of their campus.

Former Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones' statement, "Education is truly a shared responsibility, it takes a village to educate a child and this collaboration among parents, the teachers, and the society is important," serves as evidence that not only one sector must be condemned for such ill-mannered acts. This highlights the importance of cooperation among different groups of people as it takes a village to raise a child. While students are guided academically and socially by their teachers within the school, guardians must play an equally important role in building their child’s values, manners, and behavior at home.

Before turning to educators for accountability, one should look at our general society and ask whether they think this country is capable of breeding a generation with integrity and conduct. Academics is not the end all, be all of a person’s development, because in actuality, academics itself is influenced by other factors that may need addressing.

Children need a supportive community to grow, and that community extends beyond schools and educational institutions. It includes the family, peers, recreational spaces, online environments, and the broader society in which young people develop.

Pointing fingers is not the answer; working together is. Parents must take the lead in teaching respect, discipline, and responsibility at home, while teachers continue to strengthen these values in the classroom. A child’s character cannot be built by just one person — it takes a home, a school, and a community working together.

𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 | 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗘𝗱 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

Aiming to minimize the loss of instructional days, the Department of Education (DepEd) is pushing for revised emergency guidelines that would allow schools deemed safe to resume face-to-face classes even while a citywide class suspension remains in effect.

Under the proposed revisions for Executive Order (EO) 66, series of 2012, schools may resume classes after undergoing documented site inspections, comprehensive safety assessments, and securing the concurrence of the local government unit (LGU).

“While safety will always remain our non-negotiable priority, we can no longer rely on broad, blanket suspensions where an entire city shuts down even when individual campuses are dry, safe, and ready to teach,” DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara stated.

This mandate will allow more flexible learning arrangements to take place in cases of disasters and emergencies, such as severe weather disruptions, while also preventing learning loss brought by consistent class suspensions.

“If a school is clear, accessible, and certified safe, our learners should be back in the classroom without delay,” he added.

The department reiterated that, if approved, the implementation would still proceed with utmost caution and will be dependent upon the assessment of the school’s facilities and its immediate environment after a disaster.

Aligned with President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure both the safety of learners and the quality of education, the DepEd expresses faith in the policy being approved before the year ends.
