“From Dream to Detour, IE to Leadership”

When Engr. Dumaquit first entered college, Industrial Engineering was not the intended path. Civil Engineering had been the dream, but a chance encounter with a senior’s social media post on “What is Industrial Engineering” sparked curiosity. "I was clueless about this course," Engr. Dumaquit reflects, recalling the initial uncertainty. Nevertheless, they took a risk and enrolled, acknowledging that sometimes, dreams must adapt. A professor's advice also resonated: "If you dream of something, you should pursue it no matter the outcome," a sentiment that shaped Engr. Dumaquit’s approach to both academics and leadership.
During the first year, an unexpected opportunity arose as Engr. Dumaquit was appointed as the first-year representative, despite having no background in student leadership. At that time, socializing wasn’t a strong suit, and pressure seemed overwhelming. However, the Kaizen philosophy of continuous improvement became a guiding principle. "Each day, I focused on making small, manageable improvements," Engr. Dumaquit explains. By consistently applying this mindset, growth became evident, and what began as a daunting role evolved into a journey of progressive leadership development.
Ultimately, Industrial Engineering turned out to be more fulfilling than expected. What appeared to be a detour from the initial Civil Engineering dream transformed into a rewarding path filled with new interests and career possibilities. Reflecting on the entire journey, Engr. Dumaquit expresses gratitude: "It taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance." These experiences not only honed technical skills but also shaped leadership abilities, preparing them for future challenges with resilience and confidence.
