A national holiday celebrated annually on the second Monday of January, Coming-of-Age Day or Seijin no Hi (成人の日), marks a significant milestone for young adults who have turned 18, the age of adulthood in Japan.

On this day, local governments host formal events to honor the new adults, congratulating them on their journey into maturity and their new responsibilities, such as voting and legal independence. Many attendees wear traditional attire – women often don elegant furisode (振袖) or long-sleeved kimono, while men may don hakama or suits.

The day is filled with celebrations, including visits to shrines, speeches, and photo-taking with family and friends. It’s a moment of pride and reflection, symbolizing a fresh start and recognition of one’s place in society.

𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐲 is an annual public holiday in Japan celebrated on November 23. It is the modern name for an ancient harvest festival known as 𝐍𝐢𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞-𝐬𝐚𝐢 (新嘗祭(にいなめさい)). The classic chronicle, Nihon Shoki, mentions a harvest ritual having taken place during the reign of Emperor Jimmu (660-585 BC). After World War II, the United States led authorities to abolish Japanese national holidays rooted in the State Shinto mythology, including Niiname-sai. The Japanese government responded in 1948 by adopting a new national holiday law that renamed the holiday to Labor Thanksgiving Day while keeping the date the same.

On this day, school children prepare cards or gifts to distribute to police officers, firefighters, hospital staffs, personnel of the Japan Self-Defense Force, the Japan Coast Guard and other people in the labor sector to show appreciation for their contributions to the country. Companies review their accomplishments and congratulate their workers for their dedication. Families get together and have dinner at home on this holiday. In addition, citizens are encouraged to relax and take care of themselves.
