MOTHER’S DAY: How Does Scripture Honor Mothers?

“A gracious woman gets honor…” —Proverbs 11:16

IN A WORLD that often celebrates power, wealth, and fame, the Bible repeatedly directs our attention to something far more enduring: the quiet strength, sacrifice, and love of a mother.

Long before modern holidays existed, Scripture had already established the sacred responsibility of honoring mothers and fathers as part of God’s divine law. The Fifth Commandment declares:

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12)

This command was not presented merely as good advice. It was written by the finger of God on stone tablets, showing that respect for parents is foundational to a healthy family, society, and spiritual life. In fact, Leviticus 19:3 adds:

“Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father.”

Interestingly, the verse mentions the mother first, emphasizing the dignity and reverence God gives to motherhood.

THE BIBLICAL IMPORTANCE of Mothers

From Genesis to Revelation, mothers occupy an honored place in the biblical narrative. Eve was called: “the mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20).
Sarah became the mother of nations. Hannah prayed fervently for a child and dedicated Samuel to God’s service. Jochebed courageously protected Moses from death in Egypt. Mary humbly accepted the responsibility of bearing the Messiah into the world.

Behind many great men and women in Scripture stood faithful mothers whose influence shaped generations.

The Bible does not portray motherhood as weakness. It portrays it as strength wrapped in compassion, endurance clothed in humility, and love expressed through sacrifice.

Proverbs 31 paints one of the most beautiful portraits of a godly woman ever written:

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” (Proverbs 31:25-26)

A biblical mother is not merely someone who gives birth. She teaches, nurtures, corrects, comforts, and builds the spiritual foundation of the home.

IS MOTHER'S DAY Biblical?

The Bible does not specifically mention a holiday called “Mother’s Day.” Yet Scripture unquestionably supports the principle of honoring mothers.

Some critics attempt to connect Mother’s Day with ancient pagan practices associated with fertility goddesses such as Ishtar or Astarte. However, the modern observance of Mother’s Day has no historical or theological connection to the worship of pagan deities.

The contemporary holiday developed primarily as a civil and family-centered occasion dedicated to expressing gratitude toward mothers. Most importantly, honoring one’s mother is not the same as worshiping her.

There is a vast difference between respect and idolatry. Scripture condemns worship of false gods, but it repeatedly commands honor toward parents.

Celebrating a mother’s sacrifices through gratitude, kindness, gifts, or time together does not compete with God’s holy days or replace biblical worship.

Romans 13:7 teaches:

“Pay to all what is owed to them… respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.”

If believers can honor leaders, elders, and faithful servants, how much more should they honor the women who carried, nurtured, protected, and raised them?

A MOTHER'S INFLUENCE SHAPES Generations

The influence of a godly mother extends far beyond childhood. Her words often echo through an entire lifetime.

Solomon wrote:

“Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.” (Proverbs 1:8-9)

The apostle Paul also recognized the spiritual influence of mothers. Speaking to Timothy, Paul said:

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice.” (2 Timothy 1:5)

Before Timothy became a faithful minister, truth had already been planted in him by his mother and grandmother.

Many people first learn about prayer from their mother. They first learn kindness, compassion, forgiveness, sacrifice, and faith through her example. Even in difficult homes, mothers often carry enormous emotional and spiritual burdens for their children.

This is why Scripture repeatedly praises women who fear God:

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Modern culture often glorifies outward appearance while neglecting character. God values the heart, wisdom, faithfulness, and reverence of a godly woman.

THE GREATEST WAY TO HONOR Mothers

True honor is more than a once-a-year celebration. It is shown through daily love, respect, patience, gratitude, and care.

A bouquet of flowers may last a week. A heartfelt life of love and appreciation honors a mother far more deeply.

Some mothers are elderly and lonely. Some silently carry burdens no one sees. Some sacrificed dreams to raise children. Others endured hardship, poverty, sleepless nights, and pain so their families could survive.

Scripture calls believers not merely to speak love, but to live it.

“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)

And again:

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” (3 John 1:4)

One of the greatest gifts children can give their mothers is to walk in righteousness, truth, and godly character.

HONORING MOTHERS REFLECTS GOD'S Heart

Motherhood reflects something profound about God’s own character—His compassion, patience, nurture, and faithful care. While no human parent is perfect, the love of a mother often gives a glimpse of God’s tender mercy.

Today, many families are fractured. Respect for parents is declining. Yet Scripture reminds us that honoring mothers is not outdated; it is righteous.

So whether through words, prayers, service, kindness, or faithful living, let us give honor where honor is due.

“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” (Proverbs 31:28)

And finally:

“Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” (Proverbs 31:31)
