Updates from the AAHNU-BI President
Almost There…But Not Yet!
Yay ! ! ! ! This expression of joy and gratefulness pretty much described how excited the members of the HNU alumni board felt after learning that, finally, the HNU administration has assigned a piece of lot in the HNU campus where the alumni association can build its loooooong-overdue alumni center. Friends and HNU alumni all over the world congratulated us for obviously hurdling the first obstacle. That was yesterday morning. What followed in the afternoon was totally unexpected.
A group of alumni board members agreed to see Fr. Orencio Rodriguez, SVD (or Fr. RR), Assistant Vice President for Administration, in the afternoon. With an architect in tow, we thought he can show us the lot and for Arch. Rony Malanog to see what kind of prospect it has for us. At this point, we were still on cloud 9 and on our way to the office of Fr. RR. We got there only to learn that he was downtown on a much-needed errand and might not be back any time soon. We tried to inquire from his secretary if she had any idea where this particular lot could be. So, after giving our thanks, we left on an adventure of our own and never more unsure of where this could be.
We explored the area identified by Fr. RR’s secretary. We thought we found it. My heart sank at the sight of it and yet held hope that we were in the wrong place. In my mind, if this was really the lot the HNU administration has assigned us, the needs we expressed in our letter for the building to be readily accessible to alumni in times when they have any business with the association or just to spend a night there, was never addressed. In my heart, I felt so crushed and discouraged that I entertained the idea that if the administration insist that we take it, I would probably resign from my position as president of the alumni association.
On our way back to where I was parked, we spotted Fr. RR returning from his errands downtown. We ambushed him and described the lot we just visited and he confirmed. Right up front, I told him I could not accept it. I guess he understood how I felt about the lot. I thought: it is too out of the way – too far from any access; it offered no possibility for horizontal development (in a campus where space, in my eyes cannot be considered a hindrance, why did I feel so pinched in with the lot assigned to us?); I felt we were just handed out a morsel of what appears to be in abundance, otherwise.
Fr. RR listened, which was good. He said it was not within the purview of his position to decide to assign us another lot and only Fr. Estepa who is the president of the school who has the authority to do it. Knowing that Fr. President was in his office at that time, I did not want to lose time. We went to see him right away. The moment I got into the office there was no time to lose. I told him right away how I felt about the lot assigned to us and I demanded in a nice way (?) a new place.
On our way out of Bates building, I needed to know from Fr. RR how soon we will know about the new assignment. I made him understand that I have a responsibility to our alumni to be updated on this project. I will make some follow-ups as Fr. RR never promised a particular date to let us know.
To our dear alumni, help us pray that we will get a better place. Help us pray for strength, courage, perseverance that we will overcome. Till next message.
Your president,
Ma’am Neneng L. Corales
