📅 When: January 17-24, 2027, built around IDEA's Deaf Festival (happens only once every three years!)

The IDEA family extends our heartfelt sympathy and deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Sir Wilhelmus Schreurs.

We will always remember him for his genuine smile, warm and friendly nature, humility, and kindness. He was a supportive and compassionate person, always willing to extend a helping hand to others. Five hours.

That's how long Mechel Cutarra, 14, must travel to go to school.

This Grade 7 student from Talibon, Bohol is deaf—and studies at the Bohol Deaf Academy in Tagbilaran City, a journey that costs ₱500 one way. With her parents separated and her mother working as a maid, the cost of education goes far beyond school supplies. Going home isn't easy. If she goes home, it might mean not having enough fare to get back to school. So Mechel stays in the dorm for weeks, sometimes months, holding on to her education even if it means being far from the people she loves.

Thankfully, she receives educational assistance from generous donors. Those contributions provide Mechel with nutritious meals at the BDA Dorm and full transportation assistance for her trips back home during scheduled school breaks, and she can pursue her studies with less financial stress and greater peace of mind.
