My Realizations during the Global Pandemic, COVID 19

Hi, for those who don't know me yet, my name is Eunice Claudine Cruz. I'm currently working as a Luxury reservation specialist at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) in Manila, which is my first job. Before this, I was an ordinary student, living an ordinary life in an ordinary town. I'm also an officer for Junior United Hoteliers of the Philippines (JUHP) and that is how I was able to meet a lot of professionals from the United Hoteliers of the Philippines (UHP).

To be honest, at first, the virus really didn't bother me that much but it already affected my job as part of reservations. Most of our offices in China were closed so we have to accommodate Chinese clients to help and support the Chinese reservations line of IHG. That was the virus' first minor impact in my life.

In February 2020, it was finally my 1 year anniversary of being part of IHG. I was really proud of myself that I was able to be part of a nice and growing company which gives us a lot of opportunity to grow. By 2nd week of March 2020, things got very serious. Cases were spreading around Metro Manila specifically in Makati, near Makati Med where I stay during weekdays and where a case of COVID 19 was reported. I still went to the office a day before the total lockdown. Before I went home with my brother, who also works and lives just walking distance from mine, we noticed some lived just like a normal day and some already have their big bags and suitcases packed and ready to go home. People already got the news that there won't be any public transportation the next day. Since I live in Cavite, long way from Makati, me and my brother decided to go home too. Transportation was a hassle.

Today, it's July 2020. Here are my realizations through the past months since the lockdown:

Be thankful if you still have a job. I'm forever grateful that 2 weeks after the lockdown we were given an opportunity to work from home and ever since then, me and my brother still has an income to provide for our family and pay for the bills.
I have a lot of friends and family whom I know no longer has a job due to the impact of COVID 19. Bills just keep on pilling up but no income until now. It's not just here in the Philippines, it's the entire world.
I keep seeing poor families starve and risk going outside just to find money to buy food for their families. It really breaks my heart. The poor can't afford to be sick even the rich too. Poverty was already making the poors' lives worse and with COVID 19, it's now the worst.

Never let your guard down. As what I always say "kanya kanya muna" You'll never know who is infected or not. It's not just to protect yourself it's also to protect the people around you. You'll never know when you have it too unless you get tested.

Never panic. It's normal to be afraid and worried about today's situation but it never help if you over think about it. Focus on things you can control, not on what you can't control. You know you can't stop the virus and invent a cure but you know you can keep yourself safe and your family safe by reminding each other the precautionary measures and what to do when going out in public. Take your vitamins, stay healthy, eat healthy and keep your body moving and fit.

Do what you can to help. It's not always about money. As hoteliers, our number one product is service. We can always lend out an extra hand, help out and if not inspire others, give hope and courage to get through this difficult time.

Let your loved ones know how much you mean to them. During this pandemic, we are given a chance to get together with our families again. We all get to eat all together again, spend time with each other, do general cleaning at our homes. Spend time with them. Don't let your time go to waste.

Let's all stay strong and get through this together.
