DID YOU KNOW? Pneumonia in Goats Can Be Life-Threatening. π π±
Pneumonia is a serious respiratory disease in goats that can cause coughing, nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, fever, loss of appetite, and weakness. It commonly develops when goats are exposed to cold weather, damp housing, poor ventilation, overcrowding, or sudden changes in temperature.
Early detection and proper management are essential to prevent complications and reduce losses in your herd.
β
What to do if a goat shows signs of pneumonia?
β’ Isolate the affected goat to prevent the spread of infection.
β’ Keep it in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated shelter.
β’ Provide plenty of clean drinking water and nutritious feed to support recovery.
β’ Monitor the animal closely and seek veterinary advice immediately.
π Treatment Reminder
Pneumonia in goats is often caused by bacterial infections, which may require antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline, Penicillin-Streptomycin, Florfenicol, or Tylosin. However, these medications should only be used under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian.
β οΈ Incorrect antibiotic use may:
β’ Fail to eliminate the infection.
β’ Lead to antibiotic resistance.
β’ Disrupt the goat's ruminal microflora, affecting digestion and overall health.
π Healthy goats start with proper management. Maintaining clean housing, reducing stress, ensuring good ventilation, and providing balanced nutrition are the best ways to help prevent pneumonia and keep your herd productive.
