29 November 2023 - To culminate the celebration of National Childrenโ€™s Month (NCM), the Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday highlighted its significant measures in championing Learner Rights and Protection.

In her keynote speech, Vice President of the Philippines and Secretary of DepEd underscored the importance of providing children with safe space, which is vital in their development.

โ€œToday, we conclude the observation of National Childrenโ€™s Month, reminding us that we are tasked to provide our children with a safe, nurturing, and loving life that allows them to play, learn, and grow into responsible, productive, and well-rounded individuals," VP-Secretary Duterte said.

โ€œThis task is binding and requires our will, commitment, and a strong sense of unity of purpose as a community of elected leaders, policy makers, educators, advocates, development partners, business development supporters, and parents all working together to champion Filipino Children," she added.

Meanwhile, the Learner Rights and Protection Office (LRPO) launched the Learners Helpline Jingle and Theme Song titled Karapatan ng Kabataan: Kilalanin, Iparating, Itaguyod.

The jingle aims to introduce the mandates of the LTCCH and ensure easy recall of helpline numbers to learners, parents, and stakeholders.

Atty. Suzette Gannaban-Medina, OIC-Director of the LRPO, presented the Learner Rights and Protection Policy, which is the enhanced version of DepEd Order No. 40, s. 2012, including recent laws and issuances in relation to learner protection.

She also discussed the Guidelines on the Implementation of the Safe Spaces Act in Basic Education, a measure to ensure a positive and safe learning environment free from gender-based violence, especially gender-based sexual harassment.

Moreover, Atty. Gannaban-Medina explained the Protocols on the Handling of Children in Situations of Armed Conflict (CSAC) Learners, which shall guide all DepEd personnel and stakeholders on the appropriate handling and treatment of CSAC learners, ensuring the protection of all our learners in times of armed conflict.

The NCM culmination was attended by partner-organizations and allies for learner rights and protection advocacies.

Pagsalud han Dan-ag han Adlaw / Cupping the Flow of Sunlight (Gleanings from the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Eastern Visayas)

All are invited to visit UP Tacloban's 50th anniversary exhibit at the Robinson's North Activity Center during mall hours on 23-24 January 2023.

The interactive educational exhibit is the kickoff activity for UP Tacloban's year-long celebration of its 50th founding anniversary. The exhibit features paintings, photographs, specimens, maps, and multimedia productions drawn from some of the research and creative work undertaken by UP Tacloban scholars, as well as a full-sized replica of the UP Oblation by UP Artist and Professor Emeritus Grace Javier Alfonso as centerpiece. There are also scheduled performances, short lectures, workshops, and book launchings during the two-day event.

The exhibit title "Pagsalud han dan-ag han adlaw" is Victor Sugbo's translation of a line from his poem "The Fishers." The line is part of a longer segment -- "Beneath the mangrove trees, boats / Cupping the flow of sunlight / As if rainwater filling up an empty jar" -- that we take as a metaphor for the scholarly and creative work of UP Tacloban faculty, staff, and students on the natural and cultural heritage of Eastern Visayas.

The exhibit motif is mangroves, symbolizing the rich biodiversity, culture, and traditions of Region 8, as well as the resilience of Eastern Visayan communities in the face of various natural calamities and social upheavals. It is also symbolic of the interconnectedness of the scholarly disciplines in critical and creative thinking and doing.

Through this showcase of its knowledge production as an institution of higher learning over the past 50 years, UP Tacloban hopes to inspire and engage the people of Eastern Visayas in the critical work of natural and cultural heritage preservation, environmental and biodiversity conservation, community empowerment, and sustainable development.
