Researchers from the Division of Social Sciences - Psychology Program, 𝗥𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗔. 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘀, student, and 𝗘𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗔. 𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮, 𝗣𝗵𝗗, adviser, presented their paper, “𝙋𝙖𝙜-𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡-𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝙀𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙉𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙈𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙢𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙚𝙮𝙩𝙚-𝙎𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙧 𝙒𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙮,” during the 𝗜𝗸𝗮-𝟰𝟵 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗵𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼 and 𝗜𝗸𝗮-𝟯 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗻𝗵𝗮𝘄𝗮 held by the 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗵𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼 on November 27-29, 2025 at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

The study explores pag-abat, a “deliberately allowing to feel/notice”, as the Waray counterpart of pakikiramdam, highlighting its sensate, perceptive, and emotive dimensions. Through morphological analysis and grounded theory, the researchers trace how Waray communities use pag-abat to navigate emotions, interpret social cues, and sustain values of respect and igkasitawo (kapwa) in everyday interactions.

By foregrounding an indigenous Waray concept, the study broadens the discourse of Sikolohiyang Pilipino and contributes to ongoing efforts toward a more inclusive and culturally grounded Filipino psychology. This endeavor strengthens the Division’s commitment to advancing socially responsive and locally rooted scholarship and aligns with UP Tacloban College’s mission to promote regional development, cultural understanding, and knowledge production grounded in the lived experiences of Eastern Visayas communities.

UP Tacloban GE classes hold SPEAK UP 2 video showcase for VAW-free PH

In support of the nationwide 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, UP Tacloban’s Social Science 5 (Understanding Gender) classes, in partnership with the UP Tacloban Gender and Development Program (GDP) and Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment (OASH), organized SPEAK UP 2: United for a VAW-Free Philippines, a festival of student-produced short videos on gender issues held at the campus Library Hall on 26 November 2025.

The festival featured 16 short videos depicting awareness efforts, preventive measures, and avenues for help on social concerns including domestic violence, child marriage, r**e culture, victim blaming, human trafficking, and LGBTQIA+ bullying.

“CASE 6140” was declared the SPEAK UP 2 champion for its powerful presentation of the horrors experienced by human trafficking victims, most of whom are women. “Kape,” about domestic violence and emancipation, and “Fields of Her Own,” a documentary that probed the challenges encountered by female farmers in carrying out both household and agricultural responsibilities, were first runner-up and second runner-up, respectively.

This activity of the SOC SCI 5 class, a course in the General Education (GE) curriculum, aims to magnify student voices in raising awareness on gender-based violence and promoting safe, inclusive, and empowered communities.

The nationwide 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) commenced on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and will conclude on 12 December, the International Day Against Trafficking.

UP Tacloban’s Psych 188 (LGBT Psychology) class, in partnership with the UP Tacloban Gender and Development Program (GDP), held "LIVErary: Reclaiming the Narrative" on 26 November 2025 at the Multi-purpose Building.

The term 'liverary' is a coinage from 'human library' where people serve as living books sharing personal stories with participants (the 'readers').

LGBTQIA+ individuals Christiana Permejo, Kyle Domequil, Bonifil Maroto Jr., Christian Cadion, and Arthur Jean Golong served as 'living books' who shared with the students their lived experiences, challenged stereotypes, and celebrated the rich, local, and cultural complexity of q***r lives.

The devastation caused by Typhoon Tino in Cebu, Tacloban and Negros, along with Typhoon Uwan in Baguio, has left countless families struggling to survive without homes, food, or necessities. The flooding has overwhelmed streets, and many homes have been severely damaged. Our communities are facing immense challenges in securing what they need to get through this difficult time.

The UP System Ugnayan ng Pahinungód and the Padayon UP Public Service Office invite everyone to extend help to our fellow Filipinos in need through donating. Your generosity can help them meet their immediate needs and take the first steps toward recovery. Together, we can make a difference in their lives during this challenging period.

A single donation pack, filled with essential food and non-food items, costs Php 2,500.00. However, its impact goes far beyond the numbers. With your generosity, we can bring comfort, hope, and relief to 500 families struggling in the aftermath of Typhoon Tino in Cebu, Tacloban and Negros, and Typhoon Uwan in Baguio.

If you wish to extend a helping hand through a cash donation, please scan the QR code below or click this link: https://forms.gle/AzWdbWz2FD81qNqc8
