The Teaching and Learning Resource Center (TLRC) of UP Tacloban College invites our faculty members to mark their calendars. 🗓️ On April 11, 2025, Dr. Eugene Rex Jalao of the Department of Engineering and Operations Research & Artificial Intelligence Program of the College of Engineering at UP Diliman will be joining us for a talk entitled “𝘼𝙄-𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜: 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙐𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩” at the AS Conference Hall from 10:00 to 11:30 AM.

The talk is part of our efforts to enhance the UPTC Faculty’s capability to manage an AI-driven education. As learners are becoming increasingly adept at using AI in their course work, this talk and others to follow can assist us in our role of accompanying and guiding them in their learning journey.

Have you been considering talking to AI Chatbots, if not already using them, to help you manage everyday stressors?

The TLRC invites you to its symposium "To Chat or Not to Chat: Important Considerations in Using AI Chatbots for Emotional and Social Support", which is designed to strengthen UPTC students' efficacy to discern the appropriate use of these tools and its limitations in emotional and social help-seeking as opposed to health-seeking with a trained professional.

We have invited Mr. Juven Niño A. Villacastin who is now in the last phase of his research for his MA in Communicology at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, U.S.A. Mr. Villacastin is a former instructor of the BA Communication and Media Arts (BACMA) Program at U.P. Mindanao and is now researching Human-Machine Communication especially AI. Speaking from Hawaii, he will introduce us to the: a) various AI tools for social support; b) science behind AI social support; to c)strengthen students' capacity to weigh in on the potentials and pitfalls of AI chatbots in serving the aforementioned purposes.

The event will be held at the AS Conference Hall on 4 December 2024 from 1:30 to 4:00 PM. Students are strongly encouraged to participate via F2F mode. However, those who cannot be accommodated at the venue are welcome to join us via Zoom by using the QR Code that we have included below.

We live in a world where digital media is ubiquitous. Each level of human interaction is now mediated and this could get distracting, if not overwhelming, at times. Unplugging or digital detox is a mechanism for taking a break from our electronic devices, allowing us to tone down the noises that emanate from our digital connectedness.

Today, which is World Mental Health Day, we are reminded that we can make the digital detox that we need.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. The TLRC is one with our UPTC community in spotlighting conversations about mental health and ensuring a healthy academic environment.

Finding balance amidst the varied demands of the academic life is not an easy task. But we could commit ourselves to nurturing simple healthy habits that can help us find inner peace when confronted by stress.

New date for AI in higher education seminar

UP Tacloban’s “A Splinter in the AI[ye]: Demystifying Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education” seminar for UPTC faculty is rescheduled to 15 April 2024, 9:00AM to 12:00NN at the Leyte Samar Heritage Center main gallery. The change of schedule is due to flight disruptions caused by the unexpected closure of the Tacloban City airport on 3-5 April 2024.

The seminar speaker is Dr. Kristine Marie T. Reynaldo, the General Education coordinator of the Department of English and Comparative Literature in UP Diliman, and Institutional Representative of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society.

The seminar is organized by the UPTC Teaching and Learning Resource Center with the College Committee on Teaching and Learning.

Attention, all UP Tacloban students.

Pre-registration period for the First Semester of Academic Year 2023-2024 is scheduled on 18-21 July 2023.

Please be guided by the order of pre-registration:
* 18 July - Incoming Fourth Year and 5 & Up students (Student No. starting 2020 and below)
* 19 July - Incoming Third Year students (Student No. starting 2021)
* 20 July - Incoming Second Year students (Student No. starting 2022)

Angela Duckworth, the author of "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance" and "The Science and Practice of Self-Control", defines self-discipline as “the ability to suppress prepotent responses in the service of a higher goal."

The program aims to provide academic assistance to students who are struggling with their courses. The tutorial sessions are free of charge for all UPVTC students who are enrolled in FS 2022-2023.
