🌳 Call for Undergraduate and Graduate Thesis Students!

Are you passionate about mangrove ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate science? Interested in exploring how mangroves contribute to our planet's future? Then this is for you!

We are looking for thesis students to engage in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research on mangrove ecosystem health, biodiversity, and blue carbon, under the project "Development of Integrated Indices of State of Ecosystem Health in Conserved, Recolonized and Restored Mangroves (SECuRe Mangroves)."

This study will support mangrove conservation, restoration, and climate change adaptation by developing an integrated ecosystem health assessment framework.

🌿 Possible thesis topics include:

Mangrove vegetation and structural complexity
Microbial dynamics in mangrove ecosystems
Mangrove degradation, change detection, and early warning (extents, percentage cover, canopy stress and damage)
Species mapping and biodiversity assessment using hyperspectral RS
Assessment of drivers of mangrove deforestation and degradation
Mangrove fractional cover and height estimation
Above-ground biomass estimation using various RS (including new systems such as NISAR and Biomass)
Mangrove vulnerability/adaptability to sea-level rise
Improving mangrove mapping with super-resolution and/or satellite embeddings
Spatial multicriteria evaluation (SMCE) modelling for optimal planting and rehabilitation

Charlene Manese is a doctoral student in history at the Universidad de Sevilla in Seville, Spain. She obtained her master's degree in archaeology and heritage from the Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville, Spain, through the Programa de Becas del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación - Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (MAEC-AECID). She also holds a graduate diploma in archaeology from the University of the Philippines Diliman Archaeological Studies Program (now School of Archaeology).

As an advocate of local history and culture, she became one of the founding members and current president of the Katipunan da ring Talasaliksik at Talaturung Kapampangan (KATATAGAN), a fully accredited member affiliate of the Local Historical Committees Network (LHCN) of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). Further, she is also a member of the Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts (SCCTA) Kapampangan-Tagalog-Sambal Cluster.

With her interest in Spanish history, culture, and language, she received a grant from the Hispanex Program of the Spanish Government’s Ministerio de Cultura for her work on the cemeteries of Alta Pampanga and Bulacan.

As an educator, she was able to handle different courses in fields such as history, archaeology, and the Spanish language at educational institutions in Pampanga, Bulacan, and Manila, namely Holy Angel University, Dalubhasaang Politekniko ng Lungsod ng Baliwag, University of Santo Tomas, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines, among others.
