𝐔𝐏 𝐓𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐝

The University of the Philippines Tacloban secured first place in the 2026 STEM Olympiad held on July 16, 2026, besting teams from 10 other competing state universities.

The competition was conducted as part of the activities of the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW), organized by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office VIII at Robinsons North Tacloban.

Representing UP Tacloban were Dan Gideon A. Deypalan, an incoming third-year BS Biology student; Ian Godfrey Guy-Joco, an incoming third-year BS Applied Mathematics student; and Jade Reinrick C. Mejico, an incoming fourth-year BS Applied Mathematics student. The team demonstrated outstanding knowledge, analytical ability, and teamwork in the various STEM challenges featured in the Olympiad.

The students were guided by their coaches, Asst. Prof. Olga G. Corales-Ultra, Asst. Prof. Dave I. P***n, Asst. Prof. Catherine B. Lago, and Asst. Prof. Annie Lyn T. Yusiong, and Engr. Rick Jason D. Ranjo.

For nearly six years, Frenchie Mae Cumpio and Marielle "Maye" Domequil lived in confinement, oppression, and duress. Their lives were spent in imprisonment due to their arrest with fabricated charges. This abuse marks a dark time in our society as journalists, writers, and activists are actively repressed by an oppressive system.

This increasingly concerning situation shows how the will of the people could be subjugated, and injustices are perpetuated. The implications of this are damaging, as continued violence against the people encourages a world where logical thinking is subdued, and living is not democratic.

Hence, the UP Mathematics Alliance shows our full support for the acquittal of Frenchie Mae Cumpio and Marielle "Maye" Domequil.

We stand firmly with the absolution of their supposed "crimes" and believe in the day where the Tacloban 5 roam free.

We stand by our convictions in fighting against coercion and violence that would suppress any form of critical thinking.

We stand by a world where voices are heard, and injustices are met with their reparation.

Through this, we call and show our belief in accountability, justice, and freedom. With this, we rally behind Frenchie Mae Cumpio, Marielle "Maye" Domequil, the rest of the Tacloban 5, and all political prisoners of this country and show our resolve to the principle of a just society.

🌏Be part of the UP Tacloban YouthMappers Mapillary Workshop and discover how street-level imagery tools can change the way we visualize and map our communities. This session introduces Mapillary, a platform that allows participants to capture, upload, and use street-level imagery to improve the accuracy of maps on OpenStreetMap .

Through hands-on demonstrations and guided activities, participants in this workshop will gain practical experience in geospatial data collection and validation, which are essential skills that contribute to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. More than just learning a tool, this training highlights how mapping can empower communities and strengthen resilience through shared knowledge and collaboration.
