Anito Palomo Olfindo Jr., a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino student from the College of Education โ Filipino Unit of Leyte Normal University, recently earned recognition in the Young Farmers Challenge (YFC)โa national program of the Department of Agriculture that encourages young people to venture into agri-fishery enterprises.
As a student of LNU and an ROTC officer, Olfindo shared that the university played a significant role in shaping his discipline, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. These values, he explained, became important foundations when he decided to join the Young Farmers Challenge.
Although his academic program focuses on education rather than agriculture, he refused to see this as a limitation. Ngayon, ginamit ko ang hilig na ito bilang pundasyon sa pagsisimula ng aking agribusinessโฆโ he said. Through this initiative, he was able to address the limited egg supply in their barangay while also helping support his family.
Olfindo admitted that winning at the Provincial Level of the Young Farmers Challenge came as a surprise. At the time, he was serving as a student intern and balancing multiple responsibilities. Despite feeling that he was not fully prepared during the pitching, his project RM Poultry Farm earned recognition. The surprise grew even greater when his enterprise was named one of the Top 3 winners in the Production Category at the Regional Level. With this achievement, he now qualifies for the National Level and is preparing for the upcoming competition.
The most difficult part, he shared, was managing his time. Ngayon, I can confidently say na kaya kong magtrabaho under pressure.โ It was not a smooth journey, yet he credits his success to the unwavering support of his family and his deep faith in God.
For Olfindo, the significance of the Young Farmers Challenge goes beyond personal achievement. He believes that the Philippines may face serious food security problems in the coming decades if fewer young people enter agriculture. As older farmers retire, the country could become increasingly dependent on imported food. โ
To his fellow Normalistas who may hesitate to pursue farming, Olfindo offers a simple reminder: agriculture is not limited to those with agricultural degrees. โ
He also encourages young people to explore programs such as the Young Farmers Challenge, which provides opportunities for youth to build their own agribusiness ventures. More importantly, he reminds everyone of a simple truth that underlies the nationโs survival: โKung walang magsasaka, walang pagkain. โ
Through his journey from the classroom to the poultry farm, Anito Palomo Olfindo Jr. shows that todayโs Normalistas can cultivate more than knowledgeโthey can also cultivate the future of Philippine agriculture.
