This activity is part of the CHAMPORADO Project (Community-Led Heat-Processed Alimentary Meals for Post-Disaster Operations and Resilient Agricultural Dietary Outreach) which aims to develop disaster-ready, shelf-stable food products that can support emergency feeding programs while promoting food innovation and livelihood opportunities for communities.
The activity was conducted in collaboration with the Provincial Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (PEDIPO) and DOSTโPSTO Northern Samar, strengthening partnerships in advancing food technology and innovation initiatives in the region.
During the five-day activity, the EVFIC technical team conducted product formulation trials, water retort processing, and sensory evaluation to determine the most acceptable formulation of Ready-to-Eat (RTE) Champorado. Participants were also trained on thermal processing principles.
The successful conduct of this preliminary experiment marks an important milestone toward the development of a nutritious, shelf-stable champorado product that can contribute to disaster preparedness, food security, and community-based innovation in Eastern Visayas.

The Department of Science and Technology Office VIII, in collaboration with the Leyte Provincial Science and Technology Office, has successfully conducted an S&T intervention to enhance complementary food production in Baybay City. The intervention focused on optimizing the manufacturing process and improving product quality, with a particular emphasis on baby food and milk drinks made from specific root crop ingredient.
As part of this initiative, the beneficiary, LGU Baybay, acquired a water retort, which played a crucial role in achieving significant improvements. This technology enabled them to enhance the manufacturing process and elevate the quality of the food products produced. To ensure the success of the intervention, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Leyte Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) requested technical experts from the Eastern Visayas Food Innovation Center. Mr. Mark Rembert Patindol, EVFIC Operations Manager, and Ignacio Pabilona, Equipment Operator, were assigned to conduct onsite interventions from June 26-30, 2023, in Baybay City.
The remarkable outcomes achieved were made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Department of Science and Technology, the Leyte Provincial Science and Technology Office, the LGU Baybay, and the Eastern Visayas Food Innovation Center.
