Kalinga State University, through the leadership of Mr. Victorino D. Bayed, Director of the Watershed Management Center and Project Leader, together with project members Mr. Wilfredo A. Equila Jr., Mr. Mark Anthonie B. Balutoc, Mr. Carlito P. Pebinito Jr., Mr. Richard Dean Cuaresma, Mr. Roderick E. Ete, Ms. Melba A. Gonzalo, Ms. Venus Abbacan, and Ms. Irish Pearl C. Bayed, successfully conducted a three-day โTrainersโ Training on Bamboo Propagation and Production for Livelihood and the Environment.โ The activity, held on December 3โ5, 2025 at Golden Berries, San Juan, Tabuk City, gathered participants from various sectors, organizations, and representatives from the municipalities of Kalinga, strengthening their competencies in bamboo nursery establishments, propagation techniques, and environmental sustainability.
The training aimed to equip participants with practical and technical knowledge on bamboo identification, propagation, nursery operations, and plantation management. It also highlighted bamboo as a sustainable resource that supports livelihood opportunities while contributing to environmental protectionโempowering participants to cascade their learnings to their respective communities.
Mr. Bayed emphasized that bamboo propagation is a vital strategy for environmental rehabilitation, watershed protection, and climate resilience. He shared that bamboo plays a significant role not only in ecological restoration but also in creating economic opportunities through production and enterprise development.
In her message delivered by Atty. William Puday Jr., Executive Secretary III, University President Dr. Joy Grace P. Doctor expressed support for the initiative, noting its alignment with KSUโs commitment to sustainability and community empowerment.
The first day of the training featured comprehensive discussions led by resource speaker Ms. Fatima T. Tangan on key topics, including:
-Identification of bamboo species
-Nursery establishment and management
-Soil media preparation
-Propagule selection and propagation
-Proper handling and management of bamboo planting materials
The second day focused on intensive technical training. In the morning, participants engaged in hands-on sessions on propagation techniques, planting practices, and the collection and preparation of cuttings at the KSU Bamboo Plantation. This was followed by actual nursery operations and proper planting and propagation techniques. The afternoon session covered marketing strategies, plantation establishment and management and clump rehabilitation, with Ms. Tangan.
On the final day, participants proceeded to the KSU Bamboo Plantation for an immersive fieldwork activity, applying the skills learned during the previous sessionsโfrom nursery operations to clump rehabilitation.
The training concluded with an evaluation activity and expressions of gratitude to both participants and organizers, marking the successful completion of the program.
The three-day initiative underscored bambooโs growing significance as a versatile, sustainable, and economically valuable resource. Through programs like this, Kalinga State University continues to strengthen its role as a regional leader in bamboo research, propagation, and environmental stewardship.

Delegation from Kalinga State University (KSU) are currently at the University of Antique for a Benchmarking Activity and Bamboo Project Knowledge Exchange from November 12-13, 2025.
Headed by Dir. Victorino D. Bayed, Project Leader of the Bamboo Project and Center Director, Watershed, the delegates aim to learn from UAโs initiatives in bamboo propagation, engineered bamboo production, and community-based bamboo enterprises as part of KSUโs steps in strengthening its Bamboo Project which integrates research, extension, and enterprise development.
Dr. Pablo S. Crespo Jr., UA President, together with Dr. Jelyn O. Alentajan, Vice-president for Research, Extension, and Innovation (VP-REI), Dr. Catherine C. Viesca, Vice-president for Academic Affairs, and members of the UA Executive Committee, personally welcomed the delegates as they kick-off their activities which include lectures and presentation of UA Niche on Bamboo, Campus Tour, and Community Extension Site Tour.

The KSU College of Forestry Extension, chaired by For. Wilfredo A. Equila, Jr., MSF, implemented Phase 1 of its bamboo plantation establishment in Barangay Dupag, Tabuk City, Kalinga.
The bamboo planting activity involved the Ydupag Bamboo Organization, representatives from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and selected student leaders from the College of Forestry. The initiative aimed to diversify the existing bamboo vegetation in Barangay Dupag by planting iron bamboo propagules.

On October 29, 2025, Banagao, Tanudan, Kalinga hosted an Orientation Seminar Cum Tree Planting, highlighting the power of cooperatives in promoting unity, shared prosperity, and environmental care.
The event also featured an extension service on the Philippine Bamboo Industry led by Prof. Robert Rodolfo, with the theme โThe Philippine Bamboo Industry: Issues, Potentials, Strategies, and Action Programs,โ where participants planted bamboo to support local reforestation. Thanks to the LGU of Tanudan and partner organizations, the community takes another step toward a greener, sustainable future!

DOSTโKalinga, in partnership with Kalinga State University (KSU), conducted a Coffee Rejuvenation Training at Mangali Centro, Tanudan on October 27, 2025. The activity is one of the component of the 2025 Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Tanudan Project titled โIntegrated S&T Solutions for Coffee, Waste Management, and Education in Tanudan, Kalinga.โ
The initiative seeks to empower coffee farmers by equipping them with science-based knowledge and practical skills that can enhance the productivity, quality, and sustainability of coffee farming in the municipality.
Participants included coffee farmers, representatives from the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO)โTanudan, and other local stakeholders. The event also served as a venue for knowledge exchange among farmers, enabling them to share challenges and best practices in maintaining productive coffee farms.
Serving as the resource person, Mr. Jefferson A. Himson, Director of KSU Coffee Research Center, provided in-depth discussions and hands-on demonstrations on coffee rejuvenation techniques, proper pruning, and farm management practices. His lecture highlighted the importance of rejuvenating old coffee trees to improve yield, bean quality, and market potential.
This initiative underscores DOSTโKalingaโs continuing commitment to applying science, technology, and innovation in promoting sustainable agriculture, and uplifting the livelihood of farmers in the province.

Training on Coffee Rejuvenation and Post-Harvest Management
A two-day training organized by Cordillera Disaster Response and Development Services (CorDisRDS) on Coffee Rejuvenation and Post-Harvest Management was successfully conducted on October 24โ25, 2025, in Sitio Liglig, Tanglag, Lubuagan, Kalinga. The activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of local coffee farmers in proper pruning, rejuvenation, and post-harvest techniques to boost coffee productivity and improve product quality.
For. Jefferson A. Himson, Director of the KSUโCoffee Research Center, and the resource person of the said training emphasized the importance of rejuvenation practices in sustaining the long-term productivity of coffee trees and ensuring high-quality beans for the market. Participants were given hands-on demonstrations and practical sessions to apply the techniques discussed, empowering them to adopt better farm management practices in their coffee production.
