STIS conducts Brigada Eskwela Plus, clear campus hazards
Demonstrating the true spirit of bayanihan, parents and teachers of STIS spearheaded its annual Brigada Eskwela Plus, uniting parents and teachers to foster community partnerships and undertake essential site-clearing activities across the campus grounds on August 21.
Parent-volunteers alongside school personnel collaborated to carry out extensive school grounds maintenance and safety clearing. Ground activities included weeding in the backyard, extensive grass cutting, repainting of chairs and tables, repainting of JHS classrooms, cleaning of the clogged canals, and minor classroom repairs to ensure that all learning spaces are clean, secure for both learners and teachers.
A major focus of this Brigada plus was acting on a professional hazard assessment conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), parent-volunteers collaborated to safely dismantle and remove outdated cemented benches situated directly in front of the classrooms. The removal of these concrete obstacles eliminates potential trip hazards and clears key pathway routes for young learners.
Expressing deep gratitude to the community, School Head Airen L. Ammiyao commended the stakeholders for their active participation. “We are profoundly grateful to our parents and donors for their unwavering support,” Ammiyao said. “Accomplishing all these tasks would have been impossible without them. Their active presence today clearly reflects their strong commitment and dedication to our school.”

Students taking up Forestry at Aklan State University–Banga Campus took a short Botany quiz using an unconventional answer sheet: leaves.

College instructor Kynth Edrel Rebaño, also known as “Aklanong Manggugubat,” shared photos of the activity on Facebook, showing students writing their answers directly on leaves from trees and plants.

“Sinong nagsabing papel lang ang puwedeng gamitin sa quiz?” Rebaño wrote in his post.

According to Rebaño, the activity was conducted in Botany, with the leaves serving as an alternative material for the students’ short quiz.

Beyond making the classroom exercise unusual, the activity gave students an opportunity to work with leaves, which are themselves part of what they study in Botany. Rebaño said the exercise also highlighted resourcefulness and environmental awareness.

The activity also points to the possibility of using alternative materials for simple classroom tasks, while reducing paper use where practical.

For the Forestry students, their quiz answer sheets became part of the lesson itself: leaves taken from the natural environment they are being trained to understand and work with.

Safety First: BFP Conducts Disaster Drill, Campus Inspection at STIS
Five personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) conducted a fire and earthquake drill at Southern Tabuk Integrated School (STIS) to strengthen disaster preparedness and promote a culture of safety among learners and school personnel on July 28, 2026.
Without a prior notice, the BFP personnel pressed the emergency alarm signaled the start of the simulation, prompting learners, teachers, and non-teaching personnel to immediately carry out the school's earthquake response procedures. Participants performed the "Duck, Cover, and Hold" technique before calmly evacuating their classrooms and proceeding to the school ground.
The activity transitioned into a simulated fire emergency, where BFP personnel observed the school's evacuation process, monitored the response time, and evaluated the participants' adherence to established safety protocols. Following the simulation, FO1 Aubrey Jane Taya-an gave a brief post-activity assessment, identifying areas for improvement and underscoring the crucial role teachers play in protecting learners and maintaining order during emergencies and disaster situations.
BFP personnel also conducted a thorough inspection of the school premises, examining classrooms, administrative offices, electrical installations, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, evacuation routes, and other critical facilities. The inspection sought to identify possible fire and safety hazards and ensure that the school's facilities comply with fire safety standards.

HPG Leads Road Safety Information Drive at STIS
The Highway Patrol Group (HPG), headed by Lt. Ronnie Fangi, conducted an information drive on road safety and traffic regulations for STIS learners during the flag ceremony held on Monday, June 22.
Lt. Fangi stressed the importance of helmet use for all motorcycle riders. He urged learners to encourage their older siblings and relatives who use motorcycles to consistently wear helmets, highlighting that this simple safety measure can significantly reduce the risk of serious injuries during road accidents.
According to the HPG, three of them will be stationed at the school entrance to assist the learners and supervised the traffic flow especially during arrival and dismissals.
The school admin expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the HPG and hoped for a strong partnership in promoting a culture of safety and discipline among STIS learners.

Strengthened Measures: STIS conducts 2nd quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill
To strengthen disaster preparedness and promote safety awareness among learners and teachers, STIS actively participated in the NSED on June 18.
The earthquake drill officially began when Sir Christian Ralph B. Pacas, the school DRRM coordinator, activated the alarm which signaled the start of the activity.
Learners and teachers including parents present in the school immediately performed the standard safety procedures which are the “Duck, Cover, and Hold”. After the simulated shaking stopped, all learners lined up and properly evacuated their classrooms and proceeded in the designated evacuation which is the basket court.
Advisers closely supervised and monitored each of their learners. They also conducted a head count and checked for any injured learners.
School head Airen L. Ammiyao gave a brief orientation and reminders in the conduct of the earthquake drill. She also identified some areas for improvement to further enhance the school’s disaster preparedness efforts.
Sir Rafael Laderas, former SDRRM Coordinator, expressed his appreciation for the full support and active participation of parents and other stakeholders in the successful implementation of the activity stating that this year earthquake drill improved a lot more than the previous.
The successful conduct of the NSED highlighted the school’s commitment in ensuring a safe learning environment and importance of preparedness in mitigating the risks posed by natural disasters.
