Today, we commemorate a defining chapter in Philippine history โ the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution. Forty years ago, millions of Filipinos gathered along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, not with weapons, but with prayers, courage, and an unshakable belief in democracy.
EDSA was not merely an event. It was a movement powered by unity. It was proof that ordinary citizens โ students, workers, parents, religious leaders โ could stand side by side and peacefully demand change. In four historic days, the voice of the people reshaped the course of the nation and restored democratic institutions.
The revolution became a symbol recognized around the world: a reminder that freedom is not given freely โ it is protected, defended, and continuously nurtured. It showed us that leadership must be accountable, that truth matters, and that collective action can overcome fear.
As we mark its 40th anniversary, may we go beyond remembrance. Let us reflect on the responsibilities that come with the freedoms we enjoy today. Democracy is not sustained by history alone; it is sustained by participation, awareness, respect for differing voices, and active citizenship.
To the youth โ especially students โ this day is a call not only to remember but to understand. To study history critically. To engage in conversations that matter. To stand firm in principles of integrity, justice, and unity.
The spirit of EDSA lives on whenever people choose dialogue over violence, truth over misinformation, and unity over division.
May we continue to uphold the values that once brought millions together โ courage, faith, solidarity, and hope.
