In the year following the establishment of the Diocese of Legazpi in 1951, it was immediately apparent that a seminary was needed to take charge of the formation of young boys who planned to join the ordained ministry of the Catholic Church. Ariola, the first Bishop of Legazpi, with the generous support of some families in the province, organized the Minor Seminary of St. At the start of the school year 1953-1954, 28 young boys were admitted to the first year high school class of the seminary with Msgr. Belleza as their Rector-Principal and the second floor of the former Liceo de Albay building as their classroom and living quarters. Since it was urgently needed to have a more permanent site for the building and grounds of the new seminary, Bishop Ariola laid the cornerstone and proceeded to build a sturdier building in a vacant lot in Panal, Tabaco, Albay (now Tabaco City). His decision was timely because in 1960 Typhoon Olive swept through the entire province and destroyed many buildings, the old Liceo building among them. Thus in the second semester of 1960-61, the seminary moved to its new site in Tabaco, although the building was still unfinished. Shortly afterwards, the seminary gained a name as an excellent academic institution with its students winning prizes in various contests and placing among the top achievers in national and local examinations given by the Department of Education. In addition to the emphasis on moral formation and character education, the academic reputation of the seminary enjoyed an all-time high in the community and many boys of high school age were attracted to enroll. It was clear that the parents of the boys were putting a premium on the quality of the curriculum that formed and trained the students in their intellectual, moral and spiritual lives, and imbued them with a strong sense of discipline. Today, the school continues to exist, and is expected to identify its relevance to the lives of the young boys and redefine itself as an institution to prepare them for a life of full-time service to God. Its survival as an institution rests on the wisdom of the decisions made regarding its operations and on the providence and goodness of the Almighty God. Last Saturday, August 22, 2026, the seminarians and formators of Saint Gregory the Great Minor Seminary joined the Diocese of Legazpi and the faithful of Albay in commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Episcopal Coronation of Our Lady of Salvation.

Coinciding with the Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the celebration gathered hundreds of pilgrims and devotees in prayer and thanksgiving, honoring Ina and commemorating five decades of her maternal presence and enduring devotion among the faithful.

The Pontifical Mass was presided over by His Eminence Jose Cardinal Advincula, DD, Archbishop of Manila, as Main Celebrant, together with His Grace Archbishop Rex Andrew Alarcon, DD, Metropolitan Archbishop of Caceres, and His Excellency Most Reverend Joel Z. Baylon, DD, Bishop of Legazpi, along with the priests of the Diocese of Legazpi.

Fifty years after her solemn episcopal coronation, the crown of Our Lady of Salvation remains a beautiful sign of a faith that continues to flourish across generationsโ€”a faith rooted in hope, love, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As a seminary community, we entrust our vocation and formation to the maternal care of Ina, asking her to lead us ever closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.

With hearts united in faith and hope, the ๐’๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ ๐†๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐†๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐จ๐ซ ๐’๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ฒ community joined the two other seminaries of the Diocese of Legazpi in the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit, marking the beginning of the Academic and Formation Year 2026โ€“2027.

Gathered as one family of formation alongside ๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐’๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ ๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ž ๐’๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ฒ and ๐‡๐š๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐ค๐š๐ง๐  ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐š๐ก๐š๐ฒ ๐ง๐š ๐๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐“๐ก๐ž๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ ๐…๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐‡๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž, the seminarians, formators, faculty, staff, and guests entrusted the new year to the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
