Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) took a significant step toward the technology transfer and commercialization of its research innovations through an industry engagement with Erlan Foods on September 28, 2026, featuring a portfolio of calamansi rind-based food products developed through the ongoing collaborative project,
Led by ๐๐จ. ๐๐๐๐ช๐๐ง๐ค๐, together with Food Innovation Center (FIC) staff ๐๐ง. ๐๐๐ช๐๐ค, the SNSU team presented various calamansi rind-based product prototypes to Erlan Foods for industry evaluation, product enhancement, and potential adoption. The presentation provided an avenue to demonstrate how an abundant processing by-product can be transformed into value-added and potentially marketable food products.
The engagement likewise included an on-site observation of processing operations and a facility tour, allowing the SNSU team to gain a deeper understanding of Erlan Foodsโ existing production processes, facilities, and capacity. During the visit, it was noted that the company generates approximately 200 bags of calamansi peel every week from its processing activities. This substantial volume underscores the potential for value addition and circular utilization of calamansi peels, transforming an underutilized by-product into innovative food ingredients and consumer products.
Erlan Foods expressed positive feedback and strong interest in the presented technologies, particularly their potential for further improvement, scale-up, and commercialization. The company conveyed its enthusiasm to proceed with the technology transfer of the developed products and shared that facilities have already been prepared for their prospective production. This readiness provides a promising pathway for transitioning the technologies from research and product development toward actual industry application.
The activity represents an important milestone in SNSUโs continuing efforts to bridge research and innovation with industry needs. Beyond product presentation, the engagement established a potential pathway for industry adoption, allowing university-developed technologies to be refined based on actual processing conditions and market considerations.
Through this collaboration, SNSU and Erlan Foods aim to unlock the value of calamansi processing residues while promoting food waste reduction, resource efficiency, product innovation, and sustainable enterprise development. The initiative demonstrates SNSUโs commitment to translating research outputs into technologies that create tangible economic and environmental value and ultimately contribute to a stronger universityโindustry technology transfer and commercialization ecosystem.
Our sincere appreciation to Erlan Foods for the warm welcome, valuable insights, constructive feedback, and strong commitment to exploring the technology transfer and commercialization of these SNSU-developed innovations. We likewise extend our heartfelt gratitude to the SNSU Administration for its continued support, encouragement, and commitment to advancing research, innovation, technology transfer, and industry partnerships across the University.
We also thank everyone involved in the collaborative project whose dedication continues to transform research outputs into solutions with real-world impact. We look forward to strengthening this partnership and bringing these innovations closer to the market.
