PROTECTED YET POLLUTED🐟

Microplastics have reached not only Siargao’s coastal waters, but also fish living within its protected seascape.

A research team from the College of Arts and Sciences of Surigao del Norte State University examined surface water from six coastal stations and 102 rabbitfish collected in Dapa, General Luna, and Pilar.

Microplastics were detected at every water-sampling station and inside the gastrointestinal tracts of 80 fish, equivalent to 78.43% of all specimens examined.

Most of the particles recovered from the fish were fibers. Fibers also dominated the surface-water samples, showing that plastic pollution was already present in the surrounding environment and being ingested by marine organisms within the Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape.

Siargao’s protected status is meant to conserve its ecosystems and support the communities that depend on them. However, legal boundaries cannot completely shield its waters from plastic waste originating from coastal activities, nearby communities, tourism, fishing, or debris carried by ocean currents.

The findings do not mean that all fish in Siargao contain microplastics or that seafood from the island has been proven unsafe to eat. The study focused on two rabbitfish species from selected locations, and its researchers called for wider testing to better understand the environmental and possible health effects of the contamination.

Published in the peer-reviewed journal Water Science, the study provides troubling evidence that even one of the country’s protected and internationally recognized island ecosystems remains vulnerable to pollution that is small enough to escape notice, yet persistent enough to enter marine life.

The Surigao del Norte State University - College of Arts and Sciences (SNSU-CAS) conducted a meeting with the management of Nay Palad in Siargao to discuss a possible internship program. The proposed partnership aims to provide hands-on training opportunities specifically for Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science students. If finalized, this collaboration will allow students to apply their environmental expertise to sustainable tourism and ecological practices at the resort.

SURIGAO CITY, Philippines — Dr. Medielyn M. Odtojan of the Surigao del Norte State University - College of Arts and Sciences (SNSU-CAS) officially joined the Technical Working Committee on Biodiversity Conservation and Monitoring meeting held in Surigao City. As a premier environmental scientist, Dr. Odtojan was invited to present her high-impact study, “Macro Plastic Pollution in Mangrove Forests in Surigao City, Tagana-an, and Placer Protected Landscape and Seascape (SuCiTaP PLas): Implications to Community Structure and its Dynamics on Policy Framework.” Her data-driven presentation focused on the heavy plastic pollution affecting the vital ecosystems of Tagana-an and Placer, providing the committee with the essential scientific insights needed to draft upcoming ecological ordinances.

Her vital participation on the committee further proves that SNSU-CAS continuously excels in environmental research and actively helps local government bodies protect our protected landscapes.
