Today is World Mental Health Day! The World Health Organization recognises World Mental Health Day on October 10 every year with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

This year’s theme focuses on the campaign of YOUNG PEOPLE AND MENTAL HEALTH IN A CHANGING WORLD. Adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of life when many changes occur, for example changing schools, leaving home, and starting university or a new job. For many, these are exciting times. They can also be times of stress and apprehension however. In some cases, if not recognized and managed, these feelings can lead to mental illness.

Half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age but most cases are undetected and untreated. In terms of the burden of the disease among adolescents, depression is the third leading cause. Su***de is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. Harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents is a major issue in many countries and can lead to risky behaviours such as unsafe s*x or dangerous driving. Eating disorders are also of concern.

The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults. Mental health promotion and prevention are key to helping adolescents thrive. 💙💚
