In an atmosphere defined by quiet prayer and sisterly communion, Sr. Maria Lirio Gavan, SPC, was officially installed as the new Local Superior of St. Paul University Surigao. The simple yet profound installation took place on June 22, 2026, during the evening Vespers at the convent chapel.
The sacred occasion was graced by the supportive presence of Sr. Emily Louise del Castillo, SPC, Provincial Superior of the SPC Philippine Province. Joining the intimate gathering in prayerful solidarity were Sr. Marie Rosanne Mallillin, SPC, University President, alongside the SPC sisters from the local community and Rev. Fr. James Wendele P. Puracan, JCL.
The assignment of a new local superior marks a significant chapter in the life of the SPC congregation, whose religious journey is defined by a steadfast readiness to serve wherever they are called.
Sr. Lirio, who also serves as the university's Vice President for Finance Services, is widely recognized within the Paulinian community for her distinct brand of leadershipโone characterized by a quiet strength, professional excellence, and an "others-first" heart. Known for managing heavy administrative responsibilities with an extraordinary lightness of spirit, her transition into the role of Local Superior is seen as a natural continuation of her humble, selfless stewardship.
Rather than a position of distinction, the local superiorโs role in the SPC tradition is one of deep spiritual and communal responsibility, ensuring that the community remains anchored in Christ-centered service and Christ-like charity.
As the SPUS community enters this new season under Sr. Lirioโs spiritual guidance, the Paulinian family also expands its heart to welcome two new companions for the mission into the Surigaonon fold: Sr. Veneranda Del Rosario, SPC, and Sr. Bernadette R. Dumo, SPC.
True to the Paulinian spirit of being sent forth on a mission, the arrival of the two sisters serves as a gentle reminder of the congregation's enduring commitment to education, healthcare, and pastoral care in the region.
As the university community looks forward to formally welcoming them in the coming days, heartfelt prayers are offered for Sr. Lirio, Sr. Veneranda, and Sr. Bernadette, asking for continued strength, vibrant health, and grace as they embark on their respective missions in Surigao.

As the designated representative of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Caraga Region offering the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) program, St. Paul University Surigao (SPUS) Computer Engineering Program Chair Engr. Angelus Vincent Guilalas participated in the Public Consultation on the Implementing Guidelines of the Philippine Credit Transfer System (PCTS) for Computer Engineering Programs held at the Acacia Hotel in Davao City on June 19, 2026.
The consultation served as a venue for stakeholders from academia, government agencies, and professional organizations to review, discuss, and provide recommendations on the proposed policies and mechanisms governing the transfer and recognition of academic credits among higher education institutions. The activity aimed to ensure that the PCTS framework promotes academic mobility, flexibility in learning pathways, quality assurance, and alignment with national and international higher education standards.
During the deliberations, Engr. Guilalas contributed insights regarding the implementation of credit transfer policies in Computer Engineering programs, identifying potential challenges faced by institutions and students. His participation focused on ensuring that the proposed guidelines support seamless student mobility while maintaining program outcomes, curriculum integrity, and compliance with Commission on Higher Education (CHED) standards.
The event also provided an opportunity to engage with fellow educators, policymakers, and industry representatives in shaping a more responsive and learner-centered higher education system for Computer Engineering education in the Philippines.
The activity is part of broader institutional efforts toward curriculum enhancement, quality assurance, and the strengthening of academic collaboration among HEIs nationwide.

In a bid to strengthen its academic framework and elevate its institutional research capabilities, St. Paul University Surigao (SPUS) successfully conducted its five-day institutional In-Service Training (InSET) for the higher education department from June 15 to June 19, 2026.
The week-long seminar was rolled out via a hybrid setup, allowing college professors to participate face-to-face on campus while others dynamically engaged in the daily sessions virtually through Zoom.
The training kicked off on June 15 with a sharp focus on Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) and Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL). College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT) Dean Dr. Karen T. Plaza opened the event, followed by intensive lectures led by Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nikko T. Ederio, who unpacked the universityโs distinct OBE/OBTL core frameworks.
Days 2 and 3 shifted into a hands-on workshop environment. On June 16, following a synthesis by College of Business and Management Accountancy (CBMA) Dean Dr. Chanda C. Tiu, Dr. Ederio steered the tertiary faculty through course guide and syllabus preparation, culminating in a series of collaborative output presentations and peer evaluations.
By June 17, the focus pivoted toward assessment strategies. Following a recap by Engr. Kristine Georgia Po, Dr. Ederio led a practical teaching demonstration. The college faculty then spent the remainder of the day creating and polishing outcomes-based assessment tasks and rubrics designed for modern higher education standards.
The seminar dedicated its final leg to sharpening the university's scholastic edge. On June 18, the faculty dove deep into research methodologies. The specialized tracks featured a lecture on quantitative methods and statistics by College Freshmen Program (CFP) Director Mr. Larry R. Dillo, a qualitative research overview by Dr. Ederio, and a comprehensive look into mixed methods and applied developmental research by Assistant Basic Education Principal Dr. Alcher J. Arpilleda.
The intensive program drew to a successful close on June 19 following a recap by College of Health Sciences (CHS) faculty member Ms. Carmel Grace Guazon. The morning's main block featured University Library Head Dr. Mary Ann R. Pullos, who led a vital orientation on the Institutional Research Manual and APA 7th Edition standards.
To optimize the final day's timeline, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nikko T. Ederio masterfully condensed the remaining instructional blocks covering effective research teaching, student mentoring, and oral defense procedures. This strategic adjustment wrapped up the week-long InSET ahead of schedule, transforming what was originally planned as a full-day seminar into a highly productive half-day conclusion.
With the early wrap-up, the institutional training officially closed with both onsite and virtual SPUS college faculty members fully equipped, re-aligned, and ready to welcome the incoming academic year.

Demonstrating the core Paulinian value of Christ-centered compassion, St. Paul University Surigao (SPUS), led by University President Sr. Marie Rosanne Mallillin, SPC, has mobilized to spearhead relief operations for families devastated by the recent earthquake in Sarangani Province.
Braving the journey across Mindanao, the SPUS relief team successfully reached the severely affected municipalities of Malapatan and Glan, delivering immediate aid to families displaced by the disaster.
The first wave of relief operations kicked off from June 13 to 14, 2026. Two dedicated SPUS personnel, Mr. Joey Calagui and Mr. Kim Molina, left Surigao City to manage the purchasing and distribution of goods on the ground. Upon arriving in South Cotabato, they were met by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres (SPC) at the General Santos Doctors Hospital, who provided crucial logistical support by helping repack the goods and facilitating their safe delivery to the affected zones.
The initial mission successfully served 225 families across the two badly hit towns, including 30 families in Barangay Lun Padidu, Malapatan, Sarangani. Totaling โฑ200,000 in value, this first wave of distributed relief goods included food, water supplies, canned goods, and boxes of blankets and mosquito nets.
While the team managed to maximize their initial resources, the remaining supplies will be immediately channeled to Maasim, Sarangani, where residents are currently grappling with severe flooding and landslides triggered by the earthquake.
Beyond physical aid, the university is also preparing to address the emotional and psychological toll of the disaster. The SPC Sisters are currently assembling a dedicated team that will travel to Sarangani in the coming days to conduct vital psychological debriefing and trauma-healing sessions for the survivors.
โThis is definitely not the end of our relief efforts,โ the University President stated, emphasizing that the road to recovery for Sarangani will be long.
SPUS is issuing an urgent appeal to all Paulinian schools, alumni, the wider Paulinian community, and the generous Surigaonon public to extend a helping hand. For those who wish to contribute, financial donations are highly encouraged for maximum efficiency.

In times of darkness and calamity, the Paulinian flame of charity must burn its brightest. Our brothers and sisters in Sarangani have lost their homes, their security, and their peace of mindโbut through our collective love, they do not have to lose hope. SPUS invites everyone to stand in deep solidarity with these families, wrapping them in compassion and strength as they hold onto each other.

True freedom is not merely the absence of a colonial yoke, but the presence of a purpose driven by faith and service to the nation.
As the country celebrates its 128th Independence Day, the Paulinian community stands in solidarity with the Filipino nation, remembering the blood, sweat, and unyielding faith of our ancestors who fought for the liberties we enjoy today.
For the Paulinian, patriotism is an extension of charity. As we wave the three stars and the sun, we are reminded that Christ's love compels us (Caritas Christi Urget Nos) to be catalysts of truth, justice, and peace in a modern world. We honor our history not just by looking back, but by moving forwardโserving the common good with a gentle face and a fierce, steadfast spirit.
